Sea Cadets commemorate D-Day in France

06/06/2014

Two Sea Cadets from Salisbury Unit are in France this week to lead a parade to commemorate the D-Day landings. Royal Marine Cadet Gregor and Sea Cadet James were chosen to represent Sea Cadets at the 70th anniversary event in Port en Bessin-Huppain, where Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944.

They will be joining the mayor of Port en Bessin-Huppain to lead the parade through the town and then take part at the monument with surviving veterans and their families.

A big thank you to our volunteers

A massive thank you to our 9,000 volunteers who give up their free time to run their local unit, help on an offshore voyage, go on an international exchange or manage a whole range of activities across the corps from band to physical training to drill - to name a few examples! Many volunteer over 20 hours a week at their unit and give up weeks of annual leave to help out on camps and competitions, whilst having full time jobs and families.

Our volunteers are passionate and dedicated to delivering the Sea Cadet experience for young people to have the best possible head start in life. THANK YOU from Sea Cadets!

Congratulations to Sea Cadet Kira, 13 years old, from South Yorks District for taking the winning photograph – out of 55 entries - for the prestigious Royal Navy Peregrine Trophy photographic competition 2014. She was awarded her certificate by First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC DL on Thursday 29 May on board HMS Bulwark in London.

Kira’s photo caught the eye of the judges for capturing the essence of the Sea Cadet experience; having fun at your unit making new friends and learning new skills based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. As part of her prize she won the opportunity to meet the First Sea Lord at the award ceremony, an offshore voyage with Sea Cadets as well as £100 worth of vouchers for her unit in Sheffield.

Congratulations to Alfie from London Southern District for his ‘Highly Commended’ runner up award. He receives a £70 Sea Cadet Shop voucher whilst his unit receives a £50 voucher.
