With 14,000 young people across 400 towns, citys and villages across the UK, we know that reading is an important life skill, and books can give emotional and developmental support.

To celebrate World Book Day we have teamed up with our sister charity, Marine Society, to offer a 25% discount on all of their Books of the Month when you type 'NAUTILUS' in the coupon box at the checkout.  Or if you fancy reading some brand new fiction check out the winning entries for Writing@Sea.

World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

World Book Day is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all. A main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Volunteer nominated for Young Person of the Year

Aaron Scholes who joined Sea Cadets at the age of 10 and has worked his way up to become a Petty Officer and Commanding Officer at Bedford Sea Cadets has been nominated for the Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Young People of the Year!

Aaron, aged 23, was nominated by Mrs Deborah Inskip, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, she says “He is a shining example and role model for the cadets and should be commended for bringing his skills and giving so many hours to this very worthwhile organisation”. Aaron is in charge of up to 40 cadets, which is a commitment – sometimes up to 30 hours a week on top of his two jobs; a support worker in a residential children’s home and an events manager. Aaron grew up in care and found himself moved homes a few times but from the age of 10 he was in Sea Cadets. His own early life experience has equipped him to support cadets who might be in difficult situations at home or at school.  “Cadets can give them security,” said Aaron, who has a degree in childhood and youth studies.

The award will ‘Reveal, Recognise & Reward’ young unsung heroes across Bedfordshire and there is £2,000 in prize money for young winners to share with the community. Congratulations Aaron!
