Volunteer nominated for Young Person of the Year

25/02/2014

Aaron Scholes who joined Sea Cadets at the age of 10 and has worked his way up to become a Petty Officer and Commanding Officer at Bedford Sea Cadets has been nominated for the Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Young People of the Year!

Aaron, aged 23, was nominated by Mrs Deborah Inskip, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, she says “He is a shining example and role model for the cadets and should be commended for bringing his skills and giving so many hours to this very worthwhile organisation”. Aaron is in charge of up to 40 cadets, which is a commitment – sometimes up to 30 hours a week on top of his two jobs; a support worker in a residential children’s home and an events manager. Aaron grew up in care and found himself moved homes a few times but from the age of 10 he was in Sea Cadets. His own early life experience has equipped him to support cadets who might be in difficult situations at home or at school.  “Cadets can give them security,” said Aaron, who has a degree in childhood and youth studies.

The award will ‘Reveal, Recognise & Reward’ young unsung heroes across Bedfordshire and there is £2,000 in prize money for young winners to share with the community. Congratulations Aaron!

Almost two million children aged between eight and 16 have been contacted by strangers on the internet in the last year often without ever telling their parents, a report by the BBC and UK Safer Internet Centre reveals.

The safety and welfare of our young people is of paramount importance to the charity, which is why it is important to raise awareness of issues around internet use.

Sea Cadets Safeguarding Manager, Gary Trundell says 'In order to help keep children and young people safe online, its important that our volunteers are aware of the potential risks and how young people use the internet.'

Only one month to go for Clipper volunteers

Only one month to go for Clipper volunteers

Twelve Sea Cadet volunteers are embarking on an adventure of a life time on Clipper Round the World Yacht Race sailing across the mighty Pacific Ocean for 33 days in March 2014. With only one month to go, James Kenyon speaks about his excitement of this challenge of a lifetime. “I’m nervous about the Clipper challenge but I know that it’ll be an experience I’ll never forget! “The training has been tough but very rewarding. However it’s equipping me with skills and knowledge that I need to learn to manage a yacht that size. It’s massive, but on the Pacific Ocean it will look very small.”

With eight legs in total, leg six across the mighty Pacific Ocean is the most challenging of them all. The crew face strong currents, snow and very cold, damp conditions. For 33 days they will have to keep a competitive focus, preserve their kit and keep the morale high until they reach the Californian coast. Keep up to date with the race here!
