Sea Cadets commemorate Armistice Day

Sea Cadets from across the UK are taking part in services to commemorate Armistice Day. In London on Saturday 9 November, Sea Cadets (pictured) will attend the Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance; an annual event to honour those who have given their lives in the Service for their country. On Sunday 10 November, 10 Sea Cadets have the privilege to be part of the national Remembrance Sunday service joining the Royal Family and political party leaders at the Cenotaph Parade in Whitehall, London. Sea Cadets will lay a wreath on the war memorial on behalf of the charity.

Staffordshire Sea Cadets are taking part in the route line up at National Memorial Arboretum at their outdoor service on Monday 11 November. Sea Cadets will be joining Army and Air Cadets to line the steps of the Centre of Remembrance.

50 Sea Cadets from across the UK took part in a debating competition on Saturday 2 November at RAF Cranwell, Lincoln. They were given extensive training about how to structure a debate. They competed against each other debating whether national service should be compulsory, and if troops should be able to opt out of wars if they personally disagree with the conflict.

David from Chester and Staffordshire District, John from East Kent District, Bryony from North East Yorkshire District, and Alex and Sam from Tyne South District won the final debate on the day. They will join Army and Air Cadets at the national debating competition at House of Lords on Friday 29 November.

The debating competition is hosted by the House of Lords to mark the anniversary of the First World War, supported by the English Speaking Union and Royal British Legion.

This year saw the 208th annual national Trafalgar Day parade in Trafalgar Square, London. 500 cadets from across the country took part in a spectacular display and parade, including Tameside window ladder display.  Despite the wet weather forecast, the sun shone on the entire parade.

 

Reviewing officer Rear Admiral SJ Woodcock OBE, inspected the parade, with platoons from Northern, Eastern, London and North West Areas and Royal Marines Cadets from Alpha and X-Ray company and platoons of Army and Air cadets.

 

The assembled crowds were dazzled with hornpipe, club swinging, window ladder and drill displays, along with the National Massed Band of the Sea Cadets Corps.

TS Thorfinn celebrate fiftieth anniversary

Orkney Sea Cadets, the most northerly unit in the UK, celebrated their fiftieth anniversary from Saturday 12 to Tuesday 15 October. TS Thorfinn opened its doors for the very first time in 1943 and the unit has supported thousands of cadets to have thrilling adventures at sea for 50 years.

Previous and current cadets and volunteers from TS Thorfinn celebrated with an anniversary parade with a marching band led by the Corps of Drums of the Band of the Royal Marines on Orkney Island, they held a prestigious concert at St Magnus Cathedral and an evening reception at Orkney Sailing Club.

The daughter of Lt Cdr Erland Clouston, the first Commanding Officer of Sea Cadets TS Torfinn, and Peter Leith (the gentleman in the picture) attended the celebrations. Royal British Legion were also there to celebrate, they presented the unit with a new Colour.
