RNA Cheque Presentation

The Chairman of Ramsgate Royal Naval Association Mr Ron Williams made a presentation of a cheque to Commanding Officer Sub Lieutenant Lee Reynolds. This will go towards and continue the facilitation of training the sea and marine cadets. The unit has made wonderful progress and this will help to continue this further it is hope that there will be some adventurous  training in the school summer hoilidays.

New Trinity 500 and Presentations

Marine cadets Curtis, Smith and Balcombe had a recent success on a promotion assessment day held in Chatham and have promoted marine cadets first class with credit passes. The assessment included field craft, drill, map reading, camouflage and concealment. They have also fulfilled the criteria for CVQO-led BTEC Level One in Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship. This scheme is now freely available to all cadets who obtain promotion to Marine cadets 1st class or Ordinary Cadet.

 

Both the sea and marine cadets recently have completed East Kent District training weekends in Folkestone. The cadets Scott and Hurst achievement include waterborne training in rowing and paddle sports discipline. Cadet 1st class Cornwell and Marine cadet 1class Curtis achieved continuation training in the first aid and gained a St Johns qualification. Cadets Emily Edwards Keeleigh Davey and lance corporal lever completed their physical training aptitude.

 

Our staff has not been resting either with Acting Petty officers Scott and Whale have completed another module toward their promotion.

 

We welcomed on board are newly enrolled Cadet  Harry Wright to the ships company who was a junior sea cadets has progressed and turned the age of twelve where he can now wear his sea cadets uniform with pride. Leading Junior Sea Cadet Cameron Galloway (pictured) received his yellow community badge after successfully completing his modules.

 

We have now received our new Trinity 500 rowing boat kindly purchased (pictured) through a generous donation this will help the cadets to work towards their British fixed seat rowing awards. The boat hold 5- 6 persons and this will have a huge impact on our waterborne training activities.

Margate Sea Cadets needs volunteers with practical business experience living in the local area to help with the management of the unit.

 

Margate Sea Cadets have lots of roles to match your profession, you can help them manage their finances and budgets, fundraise for the unit, organise events, write press releases for the local media and build corporate relationships with local businesses.

 

Commanding Officer Sub Lieutenant Lee Reynolds says Helping and inspiring the young people through nautical adventure. Teaching new skills that they would not pick up in a school environment, developing leadership and life skills all to help give them the edge and a head start in life is a very rewarding.

 

“We need adults living in Margate and local area to share their professional skills and experience in the Sea Cadet unit to help the unit thrive in the local community. You can help give the unit direction, identifying what it needs to make it an enjoyable experience for young people.

 

“We are an independent charity that relies on volunteers in the local community to help make a positive different to the lives of so many young people in your area.”

 

Volunteers are supported by a network of other volunteers and employees. As a new volunteer you’ll receive an induction and will be given training and support to make you feel comfortable in your role. We are always there to provide ongoing help and support.

 

Margate Sea Cadets opened in 1926 at Addington square In 1967 we moved to our current location and this year we celebrate our 90th anniversary. We have supported thousands of young people in Margate to learn nautical skills, but we current 35 cadets and 14 volunteers at the unit but are looking for more!

 

Margate Sea Cadets offers an inspirational environment for young people aged 10 – 18 to challenge themselves and personally develop though nautical adventure based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. This helps young people to build a sense of identity, positively impacting their life chances, from improved post-16 destinations in employment and training to see an increased participation in communities.

Presentation evening 2015

   

Margate Sea Cadets held its annual presentation evening at the Royal Naval Association Club in Ramsgate with Margate’s Mayor in attendance and presenting officer Lieutenant Commander Phillip Coast RNR Area training officer for Southern Area.

 

The sea cadet of the year award went to Able Cadet Jack Sellers and the Marine cadet of the year went to Marine Second Class Joe Curtis this was awarded to them for their dedication their achievements in training and development over the course of the last 12 months.

 

Four cadets were presented with Bursary’s for offshore voyages in 2016 my thanks goes to our sponsors from the HMS Jamaica Association the T S bulldog and Fervent association and Trinity Freemasons Lodge. These cadets will get an opportunity to go for a week on the sea cadet’s flagship TS royalist a square rigged sailing ship.

 

Other Cadets achievements were for their high achievement in their specialisation skills in seamanship and first aid. Personal achievements awards went to Able Cadet Daniel McLean and Cadet First class Cornwell. Outstanding Marine Cadet Awards went to Marine Cadet Second Class Matthew Warner and Callum Smith. Cadet First Class Emily Edwards was presented with her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award (group photo included)

 

Petty Officer Les Brett was presented with Harry Allen memorial Shield in memory of our late unit president. Les had to take responsibility for the running and administration of the unit. Two years ago these were very challenging circumstances he faced. His showed dedication and resilience to duty for the cadets and to devote the time to the unit for fundraising, the training of cadets and all the other associated activities.

 

Margate Sea Cadet Unit was awarded an area award for its achievements in 2015.This finished off a years of hard work and dedication by the whole team of adult supporters who work as volunteers for a national youth organisation committed to inspiring confidence in young people.

September Divisions

A summer of fun and adventure was had by all at Margate Sea Cadets. The members of the ships company of Training Ship Jamaica. Annie Cowell and Teegan Jiggens got promotion to Cadet 1st Class and achieved their basic First Aid Qualification.

At the summer camp the Royal Marine Cadets Mathew Warner, Jack Balcombe, Adam Birch and Callum Smith gained their promotions to Marine Cadet Second Class. As well as developing their skills in Field craft tactics, ration cooking in the field and Skill at Arms training. Marine cadet second class Joe Curtis successfully completed his Physical Training Qualification.

Alex Scott and Emily Edwards successfully completed the basic seamanship award at a district camp along with Cadet Lewis Cornwell who completed his proficiency training in Piping. Ordinary Cadet Daniel Mclean successfully completed his promotional training and has been uprated to Able Cadet. Now the autumnal months are approaching we have a new programme of training to build on these newly learnt skills. We have already introduced Betec training in leadership and training for some of our older cadets. With plans for Duke of Edinburgh participation and some adventure training for the spring months. Whilst still continuing training afloat. All these qualifications all contribute towards the cadets’ development and they are keen to get out in the community and to work to complete their next modules and gain promotion.

We also welcome officially to the ships company by the enrolment of Cadets George Web, Mariah Challis and Courtney Challis.
