Royal Navy Parade (RNP) 2014

Royal Navy Parade (RNP) 2014

19/03/2014
This Wednesday saw the biennial Royal Navy Parade (RNP). Following on from the Unit Review Visit, the RNP forms the key part of the unit’s annual inspection. The Inspecting Office this year was the Deputy Area Officer, Commander Stewart Watt RN.

The cadets, led by Parade Commander AC Young, completed a Ceremonial Divisions and were inspected by Commander Watt and the Cllr Sheila Roden, Mayor of Luton. After tea and biscuits, the VIPs, including the District Staff, Troop Commander, Inspecting Officer and Cllr Richard Stay were treated to a tour of the unit before the ‘Evolutions’ began

The displays (‘evolutions’) comprised a guide to types of knots from the Juniors (ages 10-11), followed by a homage to the Battle Of Jutland from Sea Cadets (ages 12-17) and finished off with the 4 Victoria Crosses award at Jutland by the Royal Marines Cadets (ages 13-17). The World War One theme was chosen as 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of the start of the war.

Behind the scenes the inspecting team assessed the units and the cadets’ achievements over the last year, including boating hours completed, qualifications gained, camps attended and uniform inspection scores. The exact scores will be delivered in a few weeks.

A huge well done to all involved, and a huge thank you to all cadets, staff, committee and supporters who made that event possible.

All Aboard with P&O Ferries!

All Aboard with P&O Ferries!

07/03/2014
Two cadets from Luton were lucky enough to spend 3 days aboard a working P&O Ferry this week. The voyage took them from Hull aboard the ‘Pride Of Hull’ across the English Channel to Belgium, and back. Aside from getting the chance to explores parts of Belgium, the cadets were shown around the working ferry that transports passengers every day of the year. The cadets discovered all that goes on behind the scenes, in the engine room, on the bridge and learned about all the equipment, jobs and issues associated with a life at Sea, fantastic experience for anyone looking for a career at Sea. Well done to A/POC Newell and AC Young.

On Your Bike, Sir!

On Your Bike, Sir!

This weekend saw the first Bedfordshire District CALA course, which was attending by Lt (SCC) Lancaster RMR from Luton. The qualification entitles him to take cadets out mountain biking. The course took place at Bedford with an expedition around Grafham Water. A total of 6 CALAs were qualified this weekend, further enhancing the capability within the district to offer Adventure Training – the next stop is Climbing.

Mountain Biking (MTB) is a new branch of the Adventure Training syllabus that was revamped in 2011. With Adventure Leaders already qualified, and now with CALA qualifications in the unit, Luton Sea Cadets can now offer cadets campcraft and mountain biking within the unit. Well done, sir, though he still won’t tell us how many times he fell off!
