A Gift of Tradition: Mayor Donates Robes

A Gift of Tradition: Mayor Donates Robes

As his term draws to a close, Councillor Dwain Longley OStJ, Mayor of Featherstone, has made a lasting mark on the town by gifting its first ever set of mayoral robes – a powerful gesture of pride, tradition, and service.

Throughout his year in office, many will have seen Mayor Longley wearing the traditional red robes and laces, echoing centuries of civic heritage. Historically, these garments symbolised wealth and authority – red dye was rare and costly, and the long sleeves were once used to collect taxes from townspeople. Today, they remain a symbol of ceremonial dignity.

Until now, Featherstone had never owned its own robes – a gap in tradition that Mayor Longley was determined to put right. After researching approved suppliers, he personally purchased a full set of robes and accessories, using his own funds, and has now donated them to the town so that future mayors can wear them with pride.

But Mayor Longley’s dedication to service goes far beyond his civic role. He also holds the rank of Sub Lieutenant and has continued to parade every Monday and Friday evening with Castleford Sea Cadets, supporting our young people throughout his term.

We are incredibly proud of his ongoing commitment – both in uniform and in office – and grateful for his generosity in giving back to the town that has meant so much to him.

“It’s been an honour to serve this town. I hope these robes will be worn with the same pride I’ve felt throughout my year.”

Thank you, Sub Lt. Longley, for your leadership, kindness, and tireless support of both Featherstone and our cadets.

A big thank you to all the cadets and staff who gave up their time today to support the event at Farmer Copleys in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Your efforts and enthusiasm were fantastic, and it’s always great to see our unit getting involved in such important local causes.

Also, a huge shoutout to the Priory Rose Vintage Group Tractor Run for keeping our team fed and hydrated throughout the day – your support was very much appreciated!
