TIVVY CANAL WATERFEST

TIVVY CANAL WATERFEST

Saturday 25th May was an exciting day on the canal. The Exe Valley Rotary Club and the Tiverton Rowing Club organised a fun day of competitions and demonstrations at the Canal Basin. This was a new event and part of the Tivvyfest month of festivities.

Tiverton Sea Cadets took part in the competitions, manned a safety boat and demonstrated some of our waterborne skills. We also ran a canalside stand to generate some publicity and raise a little money.

Adam and Hunter (as Big team) won the junior section of the Canadian Canoe Races. Alex Cole won the Rowing Machine Sprint Challenge. We demonstrated dry (?) capsize drills in a Topper and walking across a raft of kayaks. The weather was perfect, there was a good turn out of cadets and staff and everyone had a great day.

We did ourselves and the Sea Cadet Corps proud and we look forward to this event growing in future years.

MAYOR'S PARADE SUNDAY 12TH MAY 2013

MAYOR'S PARADE SUNDAY 12TH MAY 2013

Tiverton Sea Cadets have always given enthusiastic support to the civic life of Tiverton.

The new mayor of Tiverton was selected at a ceremony at the Town Hall on Tuesday 7th May and, on Sunday 12th May, the new mayor, Councillor Janet Rendle, was welcomed by the town at a parade through the streets and a 'Civic Service' at St Peter's church.

Tiverton Sea Cadets were there although numbers were a bit disappointing.

A big thank you to all those that did turn out.

UFFCULME SHOW 2013

UFFCULME SHOW 2013

Tiverton Sea Cadets assisted with the car parking at the Uffculme Show.

We had a good turn out and the weather was perfect.

Leaving the unit at 0900 hrs we were at the show ground in good time. Wearing our new high visibility waistcoats we were soon busy parking cars and did an excellent job. We alternated with the Air Cadets after the first hour and a half so everyone had plenty of opportunity to visit the show exhibits and spend their pocket money. We finished the day by helping pick up litter and were back at the unit by 1700 hrs.

We were warmly thanked for our efforts by the show organisers, Exe Valley Rotary, collected over £15 from generous members of the public and attracted quite a lot of interest from parents and prospective new recruits.

Thanks to all those cadets and staff that helped. This was a really good effort and will bring real benefits to our unit.

ROW AROUND THE WORLD!

ROW AROUND THE WORLD!

The Sea Cadet Corps issued a challenge for their combined units to Row Around The World in 80 hours.

Well, actually the challenge was to row the equivalent total distance at the many units taking part - in boats and on rowing machines.

Tiverton Sea Cadets did their part from Friday 19th April until 1500 hours on Sunday afternoon, the 21st April.

In all 14 cadets and 6 staff took part. Turnout was a bit thin on Saturday but we had a good finish on Sunday. The unit had set itself a target of 100 miles rowed and we just exceeded that - 101.03 miles. Some 38 miles were rowed on the canal in the Trinity 500 and 63 miles were rowed on rowing machines.

Best performance was by Cadet 1st Class Scott Williams who rowed 12.34 miles, just beating Leading Cadet Annan (12.29 miles).

Of course, the aim of the challenge was to raise money for the replacement sail training ship and for our own replacement minibus. Cadets will now collect their sponsorship money and bring it in on Tuesday. We will then know how much we raised.

Many thanks to all those who took part, especially to PO Hammett who provided an excellent lunch on Saturday.

Our special thanks to Tiverton and Taunton Rowing Clubs who between them made two excellent rowing machines available for the event.

UNIT ANNUAL DINNER 2012

UNIT ANNUAL DINNER 2012

The Tiverton Sea Cadets held their Annual Dinner at the Tiverton Rugby Club on the evening of Friday 30th November.

This year our guests included the Mayor of Tiverton (Councillor Tom Lindus), the Mayoress, Cllr Kevin Wilson and an excellent turn out of parents and friends. There was plenty to eat and this year the senior cadets helped wait on the guests at table. The Mayor presented awards to winning cadets and PO Andrews thanked those who had helped organise the dinner and the numerous people who had helped the unit during the year (including Mr Salamo who kindly replaced our front door recently).

The raffle was efficiently drawn, once again with the assistance of the Mayor, and Lt Saupe (as usual) seemed to win most of the prizes (perhaps because he buys most of the tickets!). This year the raffle was run to raise money towards a new minibus and we managed to collect £265 - thank you to all who supported us.

After the meal, the tables were cleared away and the cadets (and quite a few guests and staff) enjoyed a disco kindly arranged by Mr Newsoms.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Our congratulations to the cadets who won trophies and, once again, our thanks to those who organised the event.
