On the morning of Monday 4th June 2012, 10 cadets (and 3 staff) gethered at the unit to prepare for the Queen's Jubilee Towpath Party. This event was organised by the Grand Western Canal Country Park staff to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Soon we had the Trinity 500 rowing boat and five kayaks up at the canal and were busy putting up a tent , a flagpole, a publicity board and a table with pamphlets and recruiting flyers.
The event started at 12 noon and the public were soon there in considerable numbers. We began by crewing the Trinity 500 and pulling up and down the canal to demonstrate our skills. Half an hour later, we launched the kayaks and the public were treated to some light hearted displays of how to kayak and how to fall in to the canal.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was a visit by the Mayor of Tiverton, Councillor Tom Lindus, who not only chatted to cadets and staff but also braved the canal waters with us. Tiverton was treated to the sight of its mayor rowing (as stroke) up and down the canal in the Trinity and doing his best to obey orders from Rachael who was cox.
The weather remained dry and the sun finally broke through by mid-afternoon. The crowds grew bigger and bigger - far exceding expectations - and a very festive mood developed with band playing and a parade of narrow boats arriving down the canal. A lot of youngsters and parents showed interest in the Sea Cadet Corps so we may get some new recruits. The announcer did his bit to support us although, when he called us Sea Scouts, Sky had to publically rebuke him over the PA system. The only problem was the large crowds made it difficult to get food or drinks.
We were joined by former AC Jasmine Rumbelow and, she and APO Sam Challeger were soon out of their kayaks and swimming in the canal. A great day and a lot of fun. Many thanks to all who turned out and, in particular to those who enthusiastically stowed everything away after the event.
