QUEEN'S JUBILEE CANAL TOWPATH PARTY

QUEEN'S JUBILEE CANAL TOWPATH PARTY

On the morning of Monday 4th June 2012, 10 cadets (and 3 staff) gethered at the unit to prepare for the Queen's Jubilee Towpath Party. This event was organised by the Grand Western Canal Country Park staff to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Soon we had the Trinity 500 rowing boat and five kayaks up at the canal and were busy putting up a tent , a flagpole, a publicity board and a table with pamphlets and recruiting flyers.

The event started at 12 noon and the public were soon there in considerable numbers. We began by crewing the Trinity 500 and pulling up and down the canal to demonstrate our skills. Half an hour later, we launched the kayaks and the public were treated to some light hearted displays of how to kayak and how to fall in to the canal.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was a visit by the Mayor of Tiverton, Councillor Tom Lindus, who not only chatted to cadets and staff but also braved the canal waters with us. Tiverton was treated to the sight of its mayor rowing (as stroke) up and down the canal in the Trinity and doing his best to obey orders from Rachael who was cox.

The weather remained dry and the sun finally broke through by mid-afternoon. The crowds grew bigger and bigger - far exceding expectations - and a very festive mood developed with band playing and a parade of narrow boats arriving down the canal. A lot of youngsters and parents showed interest in the Sea Cadet Corps so we may get some new recruits. The announcer did his bit to support us although, when he called us Sea Scouts, Sky had to publically rebuke him over the PA system. The only problem was the large crowds made it difficult to get food or drinks.

We were joined by former AC Jasmine Rumbelow and, she and APO Sam Challeger were soon out of their kayaks and swimming in the canal. A great day and a lot of fun. Many thanks to all who turned out and, in particular to those who enthusiastically stowed everything away after the event.

TIVERTON SEA CADET APPOINTED NEW MAYOR'S CADET

TIVERTON SEA CADET APPOINTED NEW MAYOR'S CADET

On Tuesday 8 May 2012, the new Mayor of Tiverton, Cllr Tom Lindus, was chosen at a ceremony in the Council Chamber of Tiverton Town Hall. He then appointed a number of officials to support him.

One of these was the Mayor's Cadet. This position was established in 2009 and is held on rotation by the three cadet forces represented in the town. The last time the Sea Cadets held the position, Leading Cadet (now A/PO) S. Challenger was the Mayor's Cadet - the first to be appointed.

In 2010, our affiliated ship, HMS Enterprise, presented the town with a genuine MIdshipman's Dirk to be carried by the Mayor's Cadet. On Tuesday, Flt Sgt Lewis Johnson of the ATC handed back the dirk and Able Cadet Hunter Annan became the first Sea Cadet to carry the antique Dirk. He will now serve as Mayor's Cadet for a year - first appearance on Sunday at the Mayor's Parade.

MAYOR'S PARADE SUNDAY 13TH MAY 2012

MAYOR'S PARADE SUNDAY 13TH MAY 2012

The Mayor's Parade took place in Tiverton on Sunday 13 May to mark the inauguration of the new mayor of Tiverton, Councillor Tom Lindus.

The parade started in Fore Street and marched to St Peter's Church for the new mayor's Civic Service.

Tiverton Sea Cadets made a good showing on a fine sunny morning and A/PO Challenger even had 'Happy Birthday' played for her by the Tiverton Town Band.

Thank you to all who turned out.
