STOP PRESS!!!! Great news from Tesco

Tiverton Sea Cadets call out for votes to bag a share of bag charge fund.

Tiverton Sea Cadet Unit is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4000, £2000 and £1000 - all raised from the 5p levy - being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.  Tiverton Sea Cadets are one of the groups on the shortlist:

"The Unit Modernisation Project has been started with the help of Tesco to bring about huge improvements to the unit on the Canal Basin in Tiverton.  The unit is thriving with increasing cadets numbers but we need to update the 60 year old building ahead of the next winter.  We are asking for local people to help us by voting for this project - the Cadets and staff appreciate all the support we can get..."

Wayne Elliott

Unit Chairman

Voting is open at both Tesco stores in Tiverton (Moorhayes and Blundells Road) throughout July and August.  Customers will cast their vote using a blue token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco's Bags of Help project has already delivered over £30 million to more than 4,600 projects up and down the UK.  Tesco custmoers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop.  Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco's regions will be awarded funding.

Lindsey Crompton, Head of Community at Tesco, said:

"We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for July and August.  There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can't wait to see then come to life in hundreds of communities."

Groundwork's National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said:

"We've been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between. We're looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life."

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities.  Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online.  To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp

First Unit Funds

Able Cadets Howe, Pritchard and Cleverly tonight presented the first sum received for the modernisation to the Unit Chairman. Showing initiative and hard work, they raised £110 in a single day selling cakes that they’d made at home – a great effort and this formally starts the fund raising!

Well done and thank you!

Tiverton Unit's Big Build Project

This edition of the newsletter is devoted to giving an update of how the plans to modernise the unit are going. So here is a summary of the key issues and progress so far.

 Fundraising

We have been very busy on this front, despite the lack of announcements:

·         Our target is £100,000, which seems a lot, but members of the Committee have met with 3 other local units (Exmouth, Exeter and Bideford) to see how they did it, as well as Area Office - we’re confident we can achieve this amount given effort and a bit of luck.

·         Tesco has offered to help us in raising money for the project. We have had 3 meetings with them now and have identified ways that the Tiverton Store can help us. Ideas are to help us at the Mid-Devon Show in July and to have a ‘Row-a-Thon’ outside the store next month

·         We have submitted over 20 applications for funding to a whole range of local and national organisations. The sums requested range from £2000 to £35000 but it often takes several attempts and sometimes a few months for these to be processed. We need stamina and patience in trying to get the funds… the money is out there, but it can be tough to hold of it!

 Planning Permission

To start gaining planning permission, we need plans and drawings, along with estimates and advise from structural experts. We have had meetings with a range of local companies and individuals and we are still waiting for some responses.

We will then have a committee meeting to decide on the next steps and release funds for moving forward.

 Future Design of the Unit

We have an outline of a ‘future design’ which has been put together after lots of discussions.

We’re planning to print off this draft plan showing how the Unit would look after work has completed and display this on a board in the Unit. At this stage we still welcome input from anyone with a view - nothing is set in stone as yet.

The idea is to retain much of the building as we feel it has character – certainly the main deck. We should try to keep as much of the history as possible while producing a unit building that is comfortable, practical and sustainable.

 Other stuff….

We need the support of the Canal Committee as well as Mid-Devon District Council.

We’ve met the Canal Committee who were very supportive and are keen to help the unit have an improved appearance for visitors to the Canal.

We’ve also asked for a meeting with the Canal Ranger Mark Baker who represents the interests of the Council. Communication has started on a lease extension as our current one expires in 2020.
