Medal Haul for TS Gurkha Paddlers

Medal Haul for TS Gurkha Paddlers

Cadets from Stratford upon Avon Sea Cadets had a huge success at the Warwickshire District Paddlesport Competition held this month in Sutton Park. Every cadet returned to Stratford with at least one medal - and the boys’ team won the overall open water trophy.

The competition began with the 2K time trials. First up was Cadet Xanthe (Junior) achieving a silver medal followed by Ordinary Cadet Alex (Open) who powered ahead to take the Gold. Able Cadet Tom and Ordinary Cadet Lewis (Open doubles), Cadet First Class Joe (Junior), Able Cadet Charlotte and Ordinary Cadet Molly (Open Doubles) and Ordinary Cadet Liv (junior) matched Cdt Xanthe’s achievement with more silvers.

The Cadets performed equally well in the sprint events. Cadet Joe put the disappointment of his first race behind him to take silver in the Open Boys Sprint. Cadet Adam received gold not just in the Junior Boys race but also in the Junior Doubles with CFC Joe as his partner. Inspired by the Junior Boys, OC Liv and Cdt Xanthe also took the Junior Girls Doubles gold. In a repeat of the Time Trial AC Tom and OC Lewis dug deep once again to try and catch the powerful paddlers from Redditch but were still delighted with a silver place as were AC Charlotte and OC Molly in the Open Doubles.

‘This is a fantastic start to our waterborne competition season’ said Team Manager, Chief Petty Officer Matt Francis. ‘Competing here on Powells Pool is very different from training on the River Avon in Stratford. The cadets have done really well. I could not have asked for more.’

Those cadets who won gold will now go forward to represent Warwickshire in the South West Area competition in South Wales in August.

This is a big event in the town and it was great to be involved yet again.

Sailing Taster Day

Sailing Taster Day

Cadets from TS Gurkha spent the day at Redditch Sailing Club trying out sailing.

This is the beginning of a new programme for Stratford Sea Cadets.  Sailing on the River Avon at Stratford is not easy whereas the lake at Redditch is much more suitable.  Those cadets that enjoyed the experience will have the opportunity to develop their sailing skills later in the year.

Stratford Sea Cadets, a local youth development charity attended Stratford upon Avon Festival of Motoring at the weekend with the Sea Cadet UK Engineering Pod. This mobile marine engineering pod holds essential kit engineering equipment, including a sectioned engine – perfect for inspiring the next generation of UK engineers

Festival visitors, especially young people, had the opportunity to see the incredible things an engineer can work on and also have a go at their own engineering, building model boats.

  1. Bank holiday Monday Cadets demonstrated their engineering knowledge to Lord Digby Jones, when he visited the Pod. He was impressed and commented ‘No young person can progress in 21st Century Britain without a skill. There has never been a greater need for engineering skills, especially of the elementary variety. The Sea Cadets are a fabulous route for acquiring those skills in a collegiate, welcoming and ordered environment. What can be better than having fun and learning a skill at the same time? It will last a lifetime.’

The Engineering Pod is part of the Sea Cadets’ new engineering initiative delivered by trained and qualified staff. Young people can learn about the basics of propulsion and buoyancy with follow up materials available to support youngsters into thinking about a career in engineering.

Karen Drinkwater, Chair Stratford Sea Cadets says: “Engineering is a large contributor for the UK particularly in this region and can offer an immensely rewarding career. Our eye-catching pod and stimulating sessions will hopefully fill the young people of Stratford with enthusiasm about the wide mix of career opportunities that are on offer. ’
