HMS Hood Parade

 

Of the 1,415 men lost in the sinking of Hood, at least 30 are known to be from the Greater London area. Several of these men are believed to have been from the South East London. The Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Hood South East London Memorial Group held its annual parade and memorial service on Sunday, 29 May 2011. Cadets and officers from Southwark, Greenwich, Beckenham, Bromley and Merton Sea Cadet units were proud to take part. The parade, including Sea Cadet guard and platoon co-ordinated by Deputy District Officer Philipa Torbett, proceeded to the Memorial Gardens for the Service of Remembrance with the salute being taken by Mayor of Greenwich, Jim Gillman, and London Southern District Officer Lieutenant Commander David Lewis, The standards and band moved into the Memorial Gardens where the service was subsequently held.

 

TS Royalist

TS Royalist

Ordinary Cadet Cead Darragh-Lee enjoyed a cruise onboard the Sea Cadet sail training brig TS Royalist. Joining at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport the vessel visited a number of ports before arriving at Plymouth and travel home. During the cruise many skills were acquired and the Offshore Sail qualification gained.

District First Aid Competition

Continuing a busy May it was off to Beckenham Sea Cadet Unit for the London Southern District First Aid Competition. For the Junior Sea Cadet Team led by Alfie Button it was their first win in the new District. PO Cadet Szmidt also won the individual trophy with the senior team also performing well.

Fast boats

It was off to the London Regatta Centre for Callum Malone, Ben Wood and Thomas Wood to take part in the Honda RYA Youth Rib Challenge. You will recall that in 2010 Callum reached the final and competed at the Southampton Boat Show. There were no Southwark winners at this years Thames Valley Regional final but Thomas finished a close second in the 8 to 10 age group.

May was has also been a busy month for Cook Steward training. Petty Officer Mahony and Chief Petty Officer Weston organised a weekend 3rd class course at Clapton Unit where cadets including Sian Cummins and Lewis Szmidt were put through their paces. Additional courses will follow later this year.
