Cook Steward Course Part One

Sunday 22nd July 2012

Cadets from the Unit completed day one of their Third Class Cook Steward course by baking cakes.......mmm very nice they were too.

The Cook Steward specialisation is based on the Royal Navy’s branch of the same name. The Third Class is an introduction to the subject where cadets receive training in basic Hygiene, Cooking and serving/presentation skills.

The second part of the course will see the cadets preparing and serving a buffet lunch to staff members including the Commanding Officer.

Cadets and staff from the Unit started day one of a Sliding Seat Rowing Course.

Sliding Seat Rowing is one of the fasted growing activities in the Sea Cadet Corps and the cadets and staff on this course are the first members of Southampton Unit to undertake this course, held at Shamrock Quay Marina.

Hopefully on successful completion of part two of the course they will all gain a British Rowing accredited qualification in Sliding Seat Rowing using the Yole Boats as seen in the picture.

Junior Section Wet Green Module Day

Junior Section Wet Green Module Day

Saturday 7th July 2012

The Junior Sea Cadets braved the falling rain today to participate in a green module (outdoor skills) training day. The Junior cadets made drank Hot Chocolate, ate Bacon, Sausages and Beans all cooked on a camping stove by themselves. Then after the washing up they went out to the small wooded area to build shelters in the pouring rain.

Slightly damp and with big smiles they rounded the day off by rigging their own Hammocks on the main deck and testing them out. Good fun was had by all.

An Extremely generous donation from the Freemasons

An Extremely generous donation from the Freemasons

Monday 2nd July 2012

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Friendship & Justice Lodge, No. 8074 of the Freemasons for their kind generosity. Mr Jason Foster from the Lodge visited the Unit this evening to present a cheque, this donation means that we can now purchase a box trailer for the unit. This will mean that the Band will be able to go out on events and transporting cadets and kit to larger courses and events will be much safer and easier.

Follwing the presentation Mr. Foster was then taken on a tour of the Unit and witnessed the cadets take to the water on a damp and drizzlely evening.
