TS LN helps raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust

TS LN helps raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust

A cold December morning at Homebase Sprowston saw cadets from TS Lord
Nelson help staff from the store raise money for the teenage cancer
trust. Along side the usual 'shake a bucket' style collection, the
cadets helped with bag packing and selling raffle tickets to members
of the public. Although there is more to count we believe the total to
be over the £500 mark!!! A big thank you was given from the organisers
at Homebase, Amanda Churcher, Jodie Day and Store Manager Rob West, a
thank you we would like to return to them for opening this opportunity
to the unit to get involved in a truly inspirational charity.

After a long hard year and a long, but enjoyable, Trafalgar parade in Lowestoft the rankings were announced for the East Anglian District Cup. Despite a fairly successful competition campaign Norwich were pipped to the top place by Beccles and unfortunately came 2nd, however this has only galvanised the strong team spirit down the unit and are already to prepare for next year to reclaim the cup.

Norwich march on to victory... again

On the 9th of October TS Lord Nelson travelled to RAF Honington for the annual East Anglian Drill and Piping competition. Norwich entered Unarmed Squad, Colour Party, Piping (individual and team), and returned with 1st place in the unarmed, colour and runner up places in both categories. An added bonus was L/C Austin bringing home best squad commander, a personal touch to a brilliant team effort.

Due to Beccles' late Inspection the winner of the District Cup will revealed at the district Trafulgar day parade... watch this space!!!

A Master class in Seamanship...

On Thursday night TS Lord Nelson had a very special visitor; Mrs K.C. Masters Daughter of Mr D. Masters kindly showed her fathers very special medal to members of the unit. The medal was the Cornwall Medal awarded to sea cadets throughout the UK who excelled in seamanship.

It all came to light when the ship was open to the public during the Norwich Heritage week. Mrs Masters boarded the ship and asked if we had any information on her father who used to be a cadet then after naval service as a member of the training staff. It was during his time as a cadet when he embarked on the very hard road towards the presentation of this rarely awarded medal.

Mrs Masters said " I was very pleased to show the medal to the unit. My father always said that out of all the medals and decorations I received whilst serving in the navy, the one I was most proud of was the Cornwall medal. I was very pleased to find more information about my father from the comprehensive records of the history of the sea cadets which is maintained at the unit". The medal which was one of two which was hard earned by cadets, and reflects the very high standard of training within the Norwich Unit.

The 10th of September saw TS Lord Nelson allow members of the public on board to see what the Sea Cadets are all about as apart of Norwich Heritage week. Along with tours conducted by the Cadets and Staff there were cakes and merchandise available to buy, all with the view to raise money for the unit's finds. The day also turned into training for the cadets as they took the water in the Unit's Champ (powerboat) and one of the T500 Rowing Boats. The training then turned into a mini boating display, which the members of the public enjoyed watching. The day as a whole was a success with the visitors being very impressed with the professionalism of the Unit's Cadets.

A BIG BZ to all those who helped in the day's activities.
