Tug of War win for Junior sea cadets

Tug of War win for Junior sea cadets

Our junior sea cadets were out recruiting recently at their local st George's day festival. While there they decided to enter themselves into the community tug of war match. the juniors progressed through the rounds before informing the commanding officer Lt Farrell that they had made the final. Staff and supporters stood by to watch as the juniors found themselves competing against the local fire brigade! there was a lot of pride and bragging rights at stake so the fire fighters by no means took it easy on the junior cadets.
The first round was easily won by the juniors, but following a slip on the grass in the 2nd round AC cogley who was assisting the junior team managed to put most of the junior team on the floor so the round went to the fire brigade. Going into the final round all was at stake and the juniors managed to tug their way to victory leaving the firefighters defeated.  The juniors are delighted with the community trophy they have won and look forward to competing again next year!

Bronze aviation wings for LC Cheng

Bronze aviation wings for LC Cheng

This year's National Sea Cadet Aviation Aquaint course was held at SCTC Weymouth and RNAS Yeovilton from 27 Feb - 1 March.

LC Cheng attended and passed she was then presented with her Bronze Wings by Commodore Martin Westwood RN who had just retired as Assistant Chief of Staff Aviation.

Unfortunately the weather was not that good during the week as the Navy's Grob fleet was grounded. However, all cadets managed a 45 minute flight in a Sea King HC4 from 854 NAS Commando Helicopter Force and, as you can imagine, this was the highlight of their week.

On return from her course Leading cadet Cheng wrote;

Having spent 5 days at my first national course, the positive atmosphere that developed whilst I was there was wonderful. On arrival at Sea Cadet Training Centre Weymouth, we all received our warm welcome (12 cadets) and begun the week with our first ever lesson... Through 2 days, we spent our day time learning theory; parts of a plane and principles of flying. During the evenings we flew on the flight simulator and practised landing and taking off (not easy). After these 2 days of hard work, we were lucky enough to go to Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton and fly in the Sea King Mk 4 - they let us open the door and experience what it felt like to look down to Earth (with safety belt of course); it was scary but worth it definitely! We visited the hangars where the new Wildcat helicopters were developing and visited the Fleet Air Arm museum as well and saw various interesting planes, especially the rare Swordfish! We took our ground school exam on Thursday including on the simulator; this consisted of a range of background learning from the theory and navigation (similar to chart work). Personally, I found this alright but nerve-racking, but during offshore leave, we all went to the arcades and went to the beach (despite it was dark). This was where I felt the true feeling of being on a national course being reflected by the proud relief and hard work in the course. Friday morning we all got presented with our briefings and gladly to say, everyone passed! We all got awarded our Bronze Wings and memories to bring home. I would love to go again no doubt…
