Offshore Voyage Aboard TS John Jerwood Sept 2016

This year PO Maleney & PO Thirlwall took 7 cadets from our unit and 3 cadets from Maryport unit down to Gosport for a week offshore aboard TS John Jerwood, where they sailed around the Solent and visited the Isle of Wight, Brighton, Bunkers Head & Poole before their long journey home.

The cadets had a fabulous time even if most of them were a little under the weather from time to time due to the sailing conditions.

Most cadets also passed various offshore qualifications

Storm Desmond December 2015

When Storm Desmond hit Carlisle we immediately opened our unit as a safe haven for those flooded out of their properties and as a drop off point for donations which were then distributed to those in need.

PO Maleney & Able Cadet Ruddick took the unit canoe out and helped rescue 24 families from their flooded properties, they worked tirelessly all day until it got dark.

Other cadets that came down to the unit also helped make sandwiches, soup etc and took these out to the flooded areas for residents and emergency workers along with fresh drinking water.

For all our hard work the unit was awarded HMS Lord Leuitenants commendation for all our hard work, the first time this has ever been awarded to a unit and PO Maleney & PO Thirlwall got their own awards too

Congratulations to POC Tamsyn Faulder who attended a gala event at the Royal College of Arts in London on 11th July to accept the Sea Cadet Open Category Award. The award was presented by the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas and is the first National award to be presented to a member of Carlisle Sea Cadets.

In what was a hotly contested competition,  Tamsyn’s photograph, seen left, was taken on our Unit visit to HMS Gannet where Cadets were given the opportunity to fly in a Sea King helicopter. Tamsyn’s prize is an offshore voyage and £100 worth of vouchers for the Sea Cadet shop. You’ll also see her photograph proudly adorning the Sea Cadet website.

So come on, get clicking and let’s see if we can follow up the success next year.

For the second year in a row, congratulations go to LC Liam Hayhow and AC Bobby Steel winners of the Sail Boat Handling completion. The pair will now go on to represent Cumbria District at Area in July. Very well done!

The regatta also witnessed cadets from Carlisle competing in more events and pushing for the overall winner’s trophy. Our thanks go to all the staff who put time and effort into the training enabling the Unit to achieve its best ever results. Here’s looking forward to even more success next year.
