Congratulations to our very own OC Lottie as she takes on the role of Avon Districts Cadet Voice Rep!

Cadet Voice is all about giving Cadets the opportunity to feed back on what is important to them to and give them that voice. The Area Cadet Voice Team will be meeting next month to discuss all the feedback provided by the District and Troop Reps who make up the team and will be looking at providing opportunities to involve everyone more in Cadet Voice.

OC Lottie has been a cadet for around 5 years, she has enjoyed many of the opportunities available to cadets throughout those years from powerboating to aviation and is a highly valued member of the team and an amazing role model for the other cadets. In her spare time she enjoys sports, especially netball and is a very keen baker. OC Lottie has entered competitions with her baked goods and has won man and gained gold medals. Not only are her baked goods pleasing on the eye but they are yummy to eat too!

We are very proud and wish OC Lottie lots of luck in this role and know she will be a very good advocate.

June got underway with new juniors joining and the units Royal Naval Support Visit.

The RNSV is an important visit for units from the Area Officer and District Officer to access the units overall progress and to highlight area's where maybe some attention may be needed. It also gives the whole team the opportunity to ask questions.

It was great to have Southwest Area Officer Commander Gary Mills Royal Navy MSc visit the unit once again.  The evening gave him the opportunity to meet the whole team and talk to all the members as well as listen to any questions they may have. As well as meeting the cadets the Area Officer was also able to meet and greet the  parents who were able to join us on the evening. We had an enrolment, good conduct stripes and swim test and water safety test certificate's awarded.

Overall it was a very good evening enjoyed by a great team!

May has been another busy Month for cadets and volunteers. Saturday 21st May we attended the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations at Shirehampton Public Hall.

We had a very productive day recruiting new juniors on our stand with many wanting to join there and then! Cadets were busy demonstrating First Aid on the day, they covered CPR, heavy bleeding, burns and scalds. The spectators certainly appeared to enjoy it and hopefully took away some important knowledge if they ever were to find themselves in a position where they needed to administer First Aid. First Aid is one of the specialisations that cadets have the opportunity to learn and it is a very useful life skill.

OC Lottie won a Gold medalfrom her entry in the cake decorating competition with her spectacular crown cake. Not only did it look fantastic it also tasted amazing!

It was great once again to be out celebrating with our local community and meeting friends old and new.

What an amazing sight it was to see!

After lots of preparation a rather damp day dawned but nothing was going to dampen our spirits, we were really looking forward to kicking off our 80th Anniversary with a Community Parade in Shirehampton with a Thanksgiving Service at St Mary's Church. As the uniformed volunteers and cadets began to arrive at the unit in preparation for the day the rain stopped!

We had the wonderful support of Bridgewater's Unit Band and support from all the units across Avon District along with Parade volunteers from the Southwest Area. This was the first time that cadets and volunteers were able to meet up since the Pandemic. It was so nice to see friends old and new who had come along to support us.

Parents and trustees provided much needed help with marshalling, refreshments and a myriad of other tasks. We truly were a great team on the day!

The Commanding Officer Lt Cdr (SCC) Alison Fowler RNR and the Chair of the trustees management team Mrs Terri Booker greeted our honoured guests The Lord Lt Peaches Golding, Lord Mayor of Bristol Councillor Steve Smitn and the Lady Mayoress, Darren Jones MP North West Bristol, Don Alexander Councillor for Avonmouth and Lawrence weston.

The Parade started at Station Road taking in Walton Road, the former site of Avonmouth Sea Cadets back in the 1940's before moving to the current site at Station Road in the late 1980's. Residents of Walton Road lined the street and excitedly waved flags as the Parade made its way to St Mary's Church for the Thanksgiving service which was conducted by Dr Andrew Schumann Sea Cadet Staff Chaplain.

Following the service, the Parade once again formed up and made their way along to Station Road Public hall where the salute was taken by the Lord Lt.

Guests and the Parade then returned to the unit for refreshments. Our thanks to all the volunteers who made the day happen, we really couldnt have done it without them.

February certainly was a busy month at the unit! 

We had the great pleasure of hosting Captain of Sea Cadets Captain Neil Downing RN along with South West Area Officer Cdr Gary Mills RN, Avon District Officer Lt Cdr (SCC) Richard Priest and Will Elliott Volunteer Support Business Manager at short notice on Monday 28th February. Since the pandemic we have not paraded on a Monday night but this was too good an opportunity for the cadets to miss and they certaintly did the unit proud with the great attendance we had on the night.

Aswell as the District Officer the Captain and the Area Officer are fairly new to their posts and it was great to have them visit as this stage in their posts.

Cadets carried out a leadership task on the evening whilst the Captain and the team talked to cadets about their Sea Cadet experiences and what they were most looking forward to in th coming year, the unanimous reply being getting back out on the water boating.
