St Albans Sea Cadet Awarded Prestigious Role

St Albans Sea Cadet Awarded Prestigious Role

In this special year of her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, Leading Cadet Charles Edwards from St Albans Sea Cadet Unit (TS St Albans) has been appointed Lord Lieutenant Cadet for Hertfordshire, and will support The Countess of Verulam in many of her official duties.

Charles, a year 10 pupil at Verulam School, St Albans, has been a member of the Sea Cadets for 3 years, and has rapidly achieved promotions passing his Leading Cadet board earlier this year within a few days of his 15th birthday.

His many hobbies are largely water-based, including scuba diving, sailing, kayaking and snorkelling, in addition to which he also holds a 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate. He also recently attained his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and is currently working towards his silver and then gold award with the help of both his Unit and School.

Commenting on his appointment Charles said, “I am really honoured to become the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet. This is going to be a busy year, but one which TS St Albans and I can be really proud of.”

Charles’ long term ambition is, not unsurprisingly, to join the Royal Navy after University as a Warfare Officer.

Four Cadets from TS St Albans were part of a flotilla of 55 Sea Cadet boats leading HM The Queen’s Jubilee barge, Gloriana, down the Thames as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations;

The flotilla of Trinity 500’s, each carried a Commonwealth flag adding to the spectacle of the day and maintaining a diamond shape for the 11Km duration of the pageant. St Albans carried the flag of Jamaica.

Petty Officer (SCC) Ted Hill MBE, the First Lieutenant & Boating Officer at TS St Albans said:

“It was an amazing day. The embankments and bridges were crowded with spectators all the way down the length of the pageant & beyond.  This is a rare opportunity and we are delighted and honoured to have been picked from sea cadet units across the county to be part of this experience”

“In the run up to the big day we were also able to help train cadets from Bermuda and Hong Kong in the handling of the Trinity 500s adding to our already good affiliations abroad.”

The St Albans crew were: PO (SCC) Ted Hill MBE, AC Alex Kataria, OC Kelly Cawley, AC Lauren Freeman & Marine Cadet James Norton.
