Weymouth Boating Weekend

Weymouth Boating Weekend

The unit joined forces with Bridgwater Unit in Somerset and travelled the the National Sea Cadet Traing Centre in Weymouth, to undertake a weekend of training on the water.

The cadets participated in Sailing and Power Boating at various levels, with each one of them gaining a qualifications in either Sailing or Power Boating.

The training centre is a National Facility with direct access to the water from Weymouth Harbour and can accomadate up to 70 male and female cadets, as well as offering the full range of afloat training, they offer a full range of shore based activities and has recently become a centre of excellence for the Marine Engineering Specialisation.

It was a great weekend with loads of hours on the water, fair winds for sailing and lots of sunshine.

The Band went back to Pre School, an unusual venue for a Sea Cadet Band Gig but we were asked if we would like to publicise our activities with in the local area and support this charity/voluntary organisation at one of their major annual fund raising events.

Southampton Maritime Festival

Sunday 5th May - Monday 6th May 2013

Ocean Cruise Terminal Southampton Docks

The cadets attended this two day event for the first time ever as this was the first maritime festival ever held. The theme of the festival was Maritime Heritage as the Festival included the arrival of the newly restored Steam Tug Challenge, and a few remaining Dunkirk Little Ships to name but a few.

The Festival opened on Sunday with the Unit Band playing on the Quayside while the Guest of Honour was Piped ashore by the Unit Piping Party and greeted by a Guard of Honour, the guest of honour was HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who went on to inspect the Band before he took lunch on board SS Shieldhall.

The Band played several sets over the two days and the support cadets manned the recruiting stand, all cadets took advantage of visiting the attractions while at the Festival which included trips round all the historic ships and watching two fly pasts of a Lancaster Bomber whilst the band played the theme music to Top Gun.

The Festival was brought to a close by the Unit Band Beating the Retreat and on completion of Evening Hymn and Sunset the Dunkirk Little Ships accompanied by SS Shieldhall slipped their moorings to form a sail past before returning to their home ports.

Cadets from the Unit went forward to compete at Area level Drill Competition, held once ain this year at the tradition home of the Royal Navy's Ceremonial Training, HMS Excellent Portsmouth.

Sea Cadet Offshore Fleet Visit

Sea Cadet Offshore Fleet Visit

Thursday 07th March 2013

With the Unit closed all the available cadets and staff travelled down to Fort Blockhouse in Gosport, which is home to the Sea Cadet Offshore Fleet of vessels.

The cadets were treated to a hands on tour of two vessels, T.S Royalist, twin masted sailing brig, the Flagship of the fleet and T.S. Jack Petchey, offshore power vessel, the newest addition to the fleet.

The fleet includes three other vessels:

T.S. John Jerwood - Offshore Power Vessel and elder sister of Jack Petchey

T.S. City Liveryman - Offshore Sailing Yacht

T.S. Vigilant - Offshore Sailing Yacht

Courses on each vessel are available to all cadets who meet the minimum age requirement.
