Regatta Success - all teams!

A fantastic day was was had when Nottingham Sea Cadet Unit hosted the District Regatta on Sunday 29th May. Nottingham built on previous years of success with all the teams entering going through to the Eastern Area Regatta in July. This year saw new cadets taking on the challenge of the different events. The Rowing Boat Handling saw an experienced coxswain take his team through. The newly formed powerboat handling team, with previously limited powerboating experience won in their fastest time yet to take themselves through to the Area event. Our racing teams of Junior boys and Open girls saw experience and novice cadets work hard together to also achieve success and go through to area. The District team played their part in the smooth running of the event, dry weather and a lot of fun had by all. Well Done.

RS Quest - Elizabeth arrives at the Nottingham...

This weekend saw the Nottingham Unit host a District Boating Weekend for the Notts & Derby District. The cadets were all using their skills to master Rowing and Power boating, and developing new skills through the peer educator course. Some of the experienced cadets took the opportunity to rig the newly arrived RS Quest. The RS Quest is 14'1'' dinghy that was designed in conjunction with the Sea Cadets, offering maximum safety & security, great for training with the ability to take up to 4 people. The unit took delivery of their new  boat on the night of the Queen's 90th birthday celebration and beacon lighting, so she became named Elizabeth. Before the end of the weekend the cadets were luckily able to give her her maiden voyages and there was enough wind to sail on the Trent.

Royal Naval Parade Success

Royal Naval Parade Success

Nottingham Sea Cadets have recently held their Royal Naval Parade – a massive biennial inspection where all the cadets showcase what they’ve achieved over the past 12 months.

On Thursday the 3rd March, Nottingham Sea Cadets played host to a variety of VIPs including the Lord Mayor, the High Sheriff of Nottingham, and the Commanding Officer of HMS Sherwood Cdr Rob Noble RN.

The evening began with a full ceremonial display from the cadets to formally open the event. The parade commander was MC1 Laurence, aged 16, who did extremely well commanding the deck for his first official time in charge.

This was followed by a short break after which the cadets put on a spectacular show entitled ‘We’ve Been Framed’. The cadets demonstrated all they’ve achieved in the last year by pretending to be part of popular TV shows.

For example, ‘Topper Gear’ was a section highlighting the exciting new sailing dinghy coming to the unit this summer, the RS Quest, and ‘Take Me Out’ to show off some of the brilliant courses cadets can attend at national Sea Cadet Training Centres.

The unit’s Royal Marines Cadets detachment also added in an excellent display of rifle drill movements set to ‘Uptown Funk’ – in the dark under a UV light.

After a huge musical finale starring a very brave AC Jade, aged 14, the inspecting officer Cdr Bagot-Jewitt RN DL applauded the efforts of all the cadets and staff, and a reception was held for the visitors.

Nottingham Sea Cadets hope to repeat their excellent performance this year with another 12 months of great achievements. Anyone wishing to get involved, whether cadets aged 10-18 or as adult volunteers aged 18+, should get in contact by email at nottinghamseacadets@live.co.uk.

Parents Welcomed to TS Orion

Recently we held an open evening for our current and prospective parents to help them understand what opportunities we have available to our cadets.

The evening was well received and now hopefully lots more of our cadets will be going on some exciting weekends away!
