The Pride of the South West Area

The Pride of the South West Area

Recognition indeed for Sherbourne at the South West Area Conference held on Saturday 22nd November. Our hard work over the past year has resulted in the unit being awarded the Commander Cameron Endeavour Trophy for a second time.

Our citation was delivered by the Area Officer at the Annual Conference held in the Great Hall at Bristol Grammar School and is awarded to the unit that makes a significant or outstanding effort in the last twelve months. Sherbourne were runners up in the South West Area of which there are 9 Districts with approx 70 units so this is no mean feat.

We would like to thank the District Officer, Lt Cdr (SCC) John Bayliss RNR for penning our citation which obviously had a big impact on the judges.

Well done to everybody, our team effort has proved to be the right formula for success, long may it continue.

South West Area Swimming Gala

South West Area Swimming Gala

Cadet Petty Officer Rhys Ellis, in company with Cadets Ellis, Fox K, Burley, Goodman and Jones C left Sherbourne at 17.30 on Fri 3rd Oct, as part of the Mercia District swimming team. Along with our District Officer, Team Manager S/Lt D.Fields, Asst Team Mgr PO Burley, Duty Driver CPO Rawlinson and CPO Sajid managing the male accommodation, we made good time in the trusty Unit mini-bus, getting to HMS Raleigh before 11. The remainder of the team arrived in TS Newfoundland’s mini-bus an hour or so behind us and the cadets settled down for the night. Girls in Vigilant block and the boys in Ganges.

Up early on Saturday for a 06.45 breakfast and pouring rain. Not the nicest of starts to a weekend! First race at 09.30 and continual racing until 16.00. The noise of Cadets screaming and shouting for Mercia team members - not from their Unit and in some cases they had not met before - working their hardest in the water was deafening. A really long day and despite the Cadets herculean efforts and some individual medals, Mercia did not come in the top 3. The District Officer watched every race and fell in proudly with his Cadets for the presentations

Dinner and change, then off to the disco for some chill time and then bed. Another early one on Sunday and we cleared the base by 09.15 for the drive back.

Although not the most successful of Sherbourne’s sojourns our young people showed some real determination, team spirit and pride. Many thanks you swimmers, the Team Manager and I could have asked no more of you and we were truly proud of you all...... Well done (and thanks for a fun weekend).

PO (SCC) Dave Burley

Flashmob Tribute to Birmingham's Paradise Forum

Flashmob Tribute to Birmingham's Paradise Forum

Paradise Forum has been an integral part of Birmingham City Centre for a number of years. It closes in December for redevelopment. Birmingham Sherbourne and Sutton Coldfield SCC bands decided it would be fun to mass and perform a 'Flashmob' as a permanent reminder of this part of Brum.

With the assistance of HMS Forward and JD Wetherspoons staff in Paradise Forum the massed band of 35 cadets and staff was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

Ths spectacle was truly awesome and left some supporters and members of the public in tears. The cheer and spontaneous applause when the performance finished rang round the Forum and will not be forgotten for a long time.

Petty Officer (SCC) Dave Burley, C/I Julie Frazer-Morris and all band staff wish to thank all those who performed, supported or assisted in any way.
