RFA Wave Ruler

RFA Wave Ruler

Officer Cadet Ryan Kean, our units Admin officer will be setting off for Bahrain where he will join his first ever ship, RFA Wave Ruler. Ryan will be spending 4 months on board this ship carrying out important roles when required by the Royal Navy. Ryan Passed out of Britannia Royal Naval College in November last year, which many of our cadets have had a recent chance to visit on the trip to HMS Raleigh, and has been studying Marine Engineering at Fleetwood Nautical College for the past six months. This is his first practical ship where he will be working with a team of other engineers on board to see how his college phase relates to the working environment.

The Unit wish O/C Kean good luck on his travels and we all hope he has a fantastic time.

ASDA Bagpack

ASDA Bagpack

At a recent fund raising bag pack at the Local ASDA in Ardrossan, our Sea Cadets managed to raise well over £400. This has been a great boost to the units funds and will enable us to continue to deliver a varied training programme to the cadets over the coming weeks. The Unit would like to say a huge thanks to the ASDA Ardrossan store for their continued support as they have contributed on a number of occasions to the unit and continually allow us to bag pack in their store.

Queens Baton Bearers

Queens Baton Bearers

The unit would like to say a huge well done to CPO John Macdonald and Able Cadet Robyn Gurney, who both carried the Queens baton through Saltcoats. Images have been uploaded to our gallery. The baton run was a huge success in North Ayrshire and it certainly brought the community together to celebrate the occasion, there was a brilliant turn out on the day and weather was perfect. The baton finished off its journey in Ardrossan where in true North Ayrshire fashion in was celebrated with a huge party, with an appearance from the one and only 'Red Hot Chili Pipers'.

The unit would also like to give a big thanks to all the cadets and parents of cadets who turned out to watch the members of our team running with the baton.

Victory at Area Rowing

Victory at Area Rowing

On the 8th of June 4 teams of Cadets from Ardrossan headed to Greenock Sea Cadets Boating station to take part in the Northern Area Rowing regatta. This event brings together all of the winning teams from each district in Northern Area which covers the whole of Scotland, Northern England, and Northern Ireland.

The teams each raced three times against different crews to prove their strength, the Girls Junior, Girls Open, and Boys Open all managed to secure gold medals. This means they can now say they are the best rowing teams in Northern Area. Not only that though, the gold medal also means that each team will be travelling to London in early September to take part in the National Rowing Regatta, which incorporates every Sea Cadet area in the UK to give our Cadets a chance to battle it out for the honour of being NATIONAL Champions.

Girls Junior

Girls Junior: Hughes, Holmes, Gribben L, McCallum, Cooper, Logan.

Boys Senior

Boys Open: Dunn, Falconer, Brown, Dickson, Agnew, McGhee.

Girls Open

Girls Open: Gribben S, Waddell, Wales, McCreadie, Guilfoyle, Gurney.

The Unit are so proud of the determination that our Cadets showed on the day and it proves that their hard work and dedication can get them further than the unit has ever been before.

It was unfortunate for our other team, the Boys Junior, who did manage to secure a silver medal but were just unlucky to get beaten by less than a boat length after a re-run of their previous race, don't worry, You'll get them next year.

The Unit also won the trophy for the Unit gaining the most points at the event, which means we took home 4 out of 5 available trophy's!

Well DONE MIGHTY GANNETS!

David Passes Out

David Passes Out

David Edgar a former cadet of Ardrossan Unit, who has been in the unit since he was only 10 years old, just completed his 10 week basic training programme with the Royal Navy at HMS Raleigh. On Friday 6th of June CPO Macdonald and CI Macdonald travelled all the way to Plymouth to see 'Disco Dave's' Passing Out Parade. This Parade is to show family and friends that those who have joined the Royal Navy are no longer civillians but instead fine Sailors. The Recruits put on a display for their friends and family and had Jmac in tears throughout. David's Passing Out Parade also had special significance as it fell on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings and such the Navy made it a special occasion to celebrate those who fought for our country back then and to celebrate the next generation of Sailors to join the prestigious Navy that is the Royal Navy.

As it was a special occasion there were high ranking officers in attendance as can be seen from the photos below and in true Ardrossan fashion David got his picture with them. Also the Fleet Air Arm gave the parade a fly past in celebration of the event.

Above is is the Inspecting Officer, Vice Admiral Alan Richards CB, Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The unit would like to congratulate David on his success and let him know how proud of him we are, we would also like to wish him the best of luck in his adventures around the world after he qualifies as an Engineering Technician Marine Engineer.
