Aberdeen Cadets Gear up for Tall Ships 25

Aberdeen Cadets Gear up for Tall Ships 25

Sea cadets from Aberdeen Unit are preparing from the adventure of a lifetime on board the Sea Cadet Flagship TS ROYALIST, one of national youth charity Sea Cadets’ offshore vessels. Cadets Tyler, Kris and Logan, are getting themselves ready for the adventure of a lifetime by sailing from the Granite City to the Highland Capital.

The cadets will join the tall ship in Aberdeen on the 15th of July and be inducted into the ships crew and learn the ropes before their 5-day sea going adventure.

The Cadets will get to experience life at sea on a unique vessel. TS ROYALIST is a purpose-built training brig which teaches young people how to sail in the traditional way. Cadets are expected to man the yards and set the sails and keep watches just as sailors of yester year, encompassing core values such as teamwork and discipline.

Cadet Tyler from Sea Cadets Aberdeen, said: “I cannot wait to join the ship and get stuck in and learn all about how the ship works as well as meeting other sea cadets from all over the UK”

Cadet Kris added “I am a bit nervous as this will be first time going to sea, but I can’t think of a better way to experience my first time on board a ship. I am look forward to learning how to sail a tall ship, but I am also look forward to learning about the onboard engineering aspect”.

Lieutenant (SCC) Peter Ritchie, the Units Commanding Officer commented “It will be a great experience for the cadets to get to sea on the TS ROYALIST, having enjoyed the experience myself as a cadet on the previous TS ROYALIST, I know the cadets are set to have a fantastic time”.

Congratulations CPO Cameron

Congratulations CPO Cameron

On Saturday the 19th of November, the Commanding Officer braved the apocalyptic weather to attend the Northern Area Conference at the Carnegie centre in Dunfermline. During the day, the Area Officer Commander - Gary Farmer - awarded a certificate of appreciation to our Training Officer, CPO Cameron who was delivering an Intermediate Drill training course to a group of Able Cadets at the Gordon Barracks in Aberdeen.

In June this year, CPO (SCC) Mark Cameron organsied and led an extremely successful Tri - Service Platinum Jubilee parade at the Gordon Barracks.

In attendance, were Sea Cadets of all ranks from across the Grampian District, as well as local representatives from businesses from across the City and Shire including the Harbour Master from the Port of Aberdeen, Alex McIntosh.

Commander Gary Farmer said CPO Cameron had demonstrated resilience and determination to re-establish firm foundations from which TS SCYLLA can flourish, making a significant impact in both the Grampian District and the wider Sea Cadet Experience.

The day's event was topped of by a Civic dinner at Aberdeen's Town House, hosted by the Lord Provost, David Cameron, again attended by representatives from the organisation's in attendance at the afteroon's parade.

New Honorary President

TS SCYLLA is proud to announce the appointment of Commodore Bob Sanguinetti RN Rtd as our New Honorary President.

CEO of Port of Aberdeen, Commodore Sanguinetti has had a vast naval career spanning over 30 years, held roles of CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping and CEO of the Port of Gibraltar.

The Oxford Graduate who was born and raised in Gibraltar, took over as CEO of the Port in September 2021 and wants to take capabilities of the Port to a new level, playing a pivotal role in the UK’s net-zero plans.

On the 18th November 2022 the Port of Aberdeen won the bid to secure the return of the Tall Ships Race to the Port. Commodore Sanguinetti was quoted in the Press and Journal as saying that the event would engage a new generation of young people in the city’s rich maritime heritage. A role now well suited as the Honorary President of Training Ship SCYLLA.

TS SCYLLA joins the nation to remember

TS SCYLLA joins the nation to remember

The cadets from Sea Cadets Aberdeen attended various services in the city but also conducted our own service at Pocra Quay. The cadets, as always, did themselves proud.

From Cadet Erin joining the Commanding Officer at the memorial in the city and to Junior Cadet Seefer who layed a wreath on behalf of the TS SCYLLA at the Dock workers memorial as they were joined also at the unit service by Councillors of the George Street and Harbour Ward, Commodore Bob Sanguinetti RN Rtd (CEO Port of Aberdeen) and Captain Ewan Rattray of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.

BZ to all.
