June District Waterborne Training

June District Waterborne Training

The weekend of 1st-3rd June 2018 saw cadets and staff from Devon District and Cornwall District come together for a combined MACT (multi-activity cadet training) event at the Sea Cadet Training Centre based within HMS Raleigh in Torpoint.

The weather was perfect for those on waterborne courses with glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze down at Jupiter Point.

There were also shorebased courses being conducted back on base in the Training Centre.

Bravo Zulu (well done!) to the four Torbay cadets who earnt qualifications in:

- Sailing
- Rowing
- Navigation

Our Officer in Charge (pictured below on the right) also decided to join cadets on a jolly down the River Plym on the powerboats.

Cadets were also treated to a disco on the Saturday evening, which thoroughly tired them out!

Thank you to our very own Lieutenant (SCC) Stephen Skingle RNR (picutred below) for helping with transport and operating the safetyboat for the rowing crew.

A big thank you also to the parents who assisted with transport of cadets to/from HMS Raleigh.

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

We now look forward to the combined Torbay and Exmouth Unit training weeked at the end of June.

Now recruiting adult volunteers!

Now recruiting adult volunteers!

Torbay Sea Cadets are actively recruiting for new non-instructional adult volunteers to join the Unit Management Team (UMT). No business experience, swimming ability or previous cadet/military service necessary!

A place on the UMT would suit those who are perhaps retired or who have some spare time on their hands and want to make a difference to the youth of Torbay but perhaps prefer to work behind the scenes.

The roles do not involve teaching cadets but you will still be an extremely valued member of the unit.

The UMT focusses on the business side of running a Sea Cadet Unit, such as premises management, finance and fundraising, health and safety and charity compliance.

Roles available on the UMT include:
- Unit Chairperson
- Unit Vice Chairperson
- Events and Fundraising Manager
- UMT Trustee

Or perhaps you are interested in joining as a Unit Assistant, where you could help in a number of non-instructional roles, such as operating the "nutty bar" (tuck shop) on parade nights, driving the minibus, maintaining the boats etc.

Full training and induction will be provided for all roles.

An enhanced DBS will be required for any new volunteer which is fully funded by the Sea Cadets.

Interested? Simply email unit@torbayseacadets.org to let us know what role you are interested in and we will let you know what you need to do next!

Devon Last Stand Parade

Devon Last Stand Parade

On Sunday 27th May 2018, cadets and staff from Torbay Unit took part in a local Royal British Legion service and parade in Paignton.

This was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Last Stand of the 2nd Devons at Bois-des-Buttes on 27th May 1918.
On this day, 29 officers and 552 other ranks of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, were either captured or sadly lost their lives during the battle. Between 40 and 80 survivors managed to cross the Aisne river and canal and rejoin the retreating British forces. However, the battalion significantly delayed the German advance, giving the French and British time to arrange ad hoc defences that brought it to a halt a week later.

More information about the battle can be found by clicking here.

The day started with a fully packed church service at our unit's local parish church - St John the Baptish Church in Paignton, where our Unit Chaplain is the vicar.

Following the service of remembrance, cadets and staff marched down to the War Memorial in Paignton town centre for the laying of the poppy wreaths. Cadets paraded alongside other cadet forces and local veterans - it is always a privilege to witness the coming together of the old and the young at commemorations like this.

Ordinary Cadet Sophia Adams proudly carried our Standard as the unit's current Standard Bearer, escorted by Able Cadet Jack Wale and Ordinary Cadet Antonio Cummings.

Today was particularly poignant as one of our very own staff members, Acting Petty Officer Anne Godfrey, laid wreaths for her late husband Nick Godfrey, an ex-submariner in the Royal Navy and a dearly missed loving husband, father and grandfather.

Learning about such important historical events, participating in local community services and remembering the fallen is a big part of being a Sea Cadet, so a big thank you to all who supported this event.
