National Combined Regatta

National Combined Regatta

Cadets and staff from TS Cossack SCC assisted at the Sea Cadet Combined Regatta.  Facilities including food and accommodation were provided at the Excel Centre with all waterbourne activities afloat at Royal Victoria Dock. The events included canoeing, rowing, yole and power, rowing and sail boat handling. With competitors taking part from all 6 Areas it was a busy but worthwhile experience and Southwark cadets contributed significantly to the overall organisation of the event.

LONDON AREA SUMMER CAMP

LONDON AREA SUMMER CAMP

In August it was off to London Area Summer Camp for PO Szmidt, Sian Cummins and Amy-Jo Rawlins. This multi-activity event was made up of 7 action packed days with a ‘serious fun’ theme throughout. Activities included shooting, adventure training, top rope, assault course, skiing and much more and there were trips to Chatham and Belgium to add to the variety.

The British government purchased a large piece of land at Shorncliffe in 1794 and fortified it in preparation for the expected French invasion. Today Shorncliffe camp near Folkestone is made up of Sir John Moore Barracks, Napier Barracks and Risbourgh Barracks. Additional facilities are available at nearby St Martins plain Camp. Excellent food and accommodation was provided for London Area Sea Cadets at Napier Barracks.

All returned having thoroughly enjoyed the experience and recommend everyone participate next year.

Dylan Neale, Alexander Smith and Israel Maforikan were lucky enough to gain a place on a Young Sailors Scheme start sailing course at London Area SCC Welsh Harp Boating Station. Brent reservoir is an ideal place to start sailing and then gain more advanced experience and qualifications. All did well gaining RYA YSS Stage 2 after training and practice. Now they will need to gain further experience before trying for Stage 3.

Leading Cadet Callum Malone usually has a busy summer and this year has been no exception. First of all it was off to HMS Raleigh to try out the new Naval Cadet Leadership Course (the Sea Cadet version of Frimley Park). It was a very active week culminating in award of the Institute of Leadership Management Level 2 award. Then after 7 days break it was off to Raleigh again for the new style Adventure Training Course. Quite a challenging week with climbing, mountain biking and Dartmoor expedition just for starters. Then after a day at home it was back to Paddington for a train to Totnes and on to the Britannia Royal Naval College for the premier Cadet Forces Leadership Course, BRNC Summer Camp. All good fun and excellent preparation for his forthcoming Petty Officer Cadet qualifying board at HMS President in September.
