Ruislip Sea Cadets Afloat for 75 years

On Sunday, 16 July, 2017 Ruislip Sea Cadet Corps reaches its 75th anniversary as the first muster for the Unit took place on Thursday, 16 July in 1942 at the Manor Senior School in Eastcote Road, Ruislip.

After 6 years the HQ moved to RAF West Ruislip's No 4 Maintenance Unit (4MU), becoming TS Astra in acknowledgement to the RAF for providing accommodation. When the RAF base closed, the HQ  moved again several times before arriving at its present location in 1961 where the Unit became TS Pelican.  Events to mark the 75th anniversary will be held later this year in September/October.

Sea Cadets at Ruislip Gardens School's Camo Day

A team of staff and cadets from Ruislip Sea Cadets attended Ruislip Gardens Junior School's Camo Day on Friday, 23 June. Camo Day is a nationwide non-uniform day for schools in aid of SSAFA, the armed forces charity, where children are invited to wear camouflage clothing, etc in return for a donation. The team ran an assembly for the whole school (about 300 pupils) involving 4 Junior Cadets who attend, followed by morning sessions for Years 4,5 & 6 in which pupils were assisted in making and then racing paper boats, undertook drill in the school playground and participated in a knot tying competition. All pupils received a flyer for a Junior "Taster" Evening to be held at TS Pelican in July.

Successful Sea Cadet Flag Week

Well, Flag Week is over for another year and it's back to normal parade evenings tonight (Monday, 19 June) when the whole Unit is at the Welsh Harp Boat-Station for a variety of boating activities.

A big WELL DONE to all cadets, staff, committee and supporters who pounded the streets during the evenings last week and roasted in the heat in Uxbridge, outside West Ruislip station, in Ruislip Manor and in Ruislip on Saturday which was Flag Day itself. The local manager of the M & S Foodhall in Ruislip came round and gave all cadets (and the Chairman!)  a bottle of iced-water on Saturday and, in Uxbridge, a former member of staff bought cold drinks for everybody. Again, fantastic comments received from the local community during the week. Thanks also to the money-counters.

Final results for Flag Week will be posted up at the Unit on Wednesday, 21 June.
