It's Fabulous February!

Ever thought about doing something new with your time? That time is now!

We're recruiting for young people aged 10 to 18 to join our junior section (10-12) bluejackets (12-18) and Royal Marines Cadets (13-18)

If you love getting out on the water and are aged between 10 and 18, join Nottingham Sea Cadets for the time of your life.

Race sailing dinghies on UK lakes, powerboat down rivers, go offshore, achieve a BTEC or undertake your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – whatever you choose, there is a world of exciting challenges at Nottingham Sea Cadets.

Nottingham Sea Cadets has supported thousands of young people in the local area to learn nautical skills, with 40 cadets currently attending, supported by 15 volunteers. However, more are always welcome.

Nottingham Sea Cadets, which is part of national charity Sea Cadets, gives young people a new perspective. We broaden horizons and create possibilities. Working across the UK with 14,000 young people between 10 and 18, we help them see the world with confidence, gained through the challenge of nautical adventure and a Royal Navy ethos. Our aim is to help more young people to see the future that they want – and make that future happen. 

The unit is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.45pm to 9.15pm, and meets at Waterside Way, Colwick, NG2 4DP. Contact us through the website for more information.

At the start of February we played host to nearly 40 cadets and adults using our facilities for an advancement board and Advanced Peer Educator course.

All of the cadets were successful, meaning there is a new class of senior cadets back at their units helping to lead the younger cadets.

Just before this weekend, we also gained a new senior cadet of our own, with Stacey-King J being rated up to Leading Cadet. This is fantastic news, and LC Stacey-King has been working hard towards this since October. She joins Cpl Williamson and Cpl Carter on our team of senior cadets.

In January 2017 we took 11 cadets and 3 staff members to Portsmouth on a joint sightseeing weekend with Northamptonshire district.

Cadets stayed on board HMS Bristol, a Royal Navy destroyer, and visited various naval sites including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Action Stations, the Royal Marines museum and the Mary Rose museum. We also got to go on a harbour boat tour, seeing all the ships in the harbour and learning a bit of history.

November/December 2016 Highlights

• AC Terry competed in the District Drill and Piping competition

• All of our cadets and staff participated in various poppy selling events and the Remembrance Parade at Nottingham Embankment

• We held 2 District training weekends, allowing cadets to gain qualifications in first aid, peer education, and marine engineering to name a few.

• Our cadets competed in the District 5 a side football competition in November, followed by the junior girls and senior boys teams competing at the Area level in December.

• At the Eastern Area Conference in November, we were awarded 3 (!!!) awards for our work in the previous year - Best RNP (Royal Naval Parade), Best Evolution at an RNP, and Best Training and Participation - which just goes to show what a fantastic experience we are offering to young people.

• We ended the year with our annual awards and prizegiving, followed by an evening of bowling.

2016 was a roaring success!

Here are a few of our highlights:

• Several teams got through to the Area stage of the Combined Regatta.
• One cadet attended the UK International Exchange held in Portsmouth/Weymouth/London, spending time with cadets from all over the world.
• Assisting the local Rotary Club with their annual Duck Race, helping to collect all of their charity ducks.
• Cadets and staff attended various summer camps including boating at Weymouth, courses on board HMS Bristol in Portsmouth, and the RMC summer camp.
• We held our very first Fun Day, with appearances from various parrots! We had stall holders and boat trips, and made lovely cream teas! We are grateful to all those who supported us in raising £229.54
• The Nottingham Princess supported us with a charity summer cruise, which raised over £900.
• The rowing boat handling team of 5 cadets got through to the National stage of the combined regatta, competing in London against cadets from all over the country.
• We held an exciting charity fashion show which raised £288
• Our RMC attended their CATSEA weekend, their annual inspection. Our detachment did very well.
• We took cadets and staff from the local area to the battlefields of WW1 on a 3 day tour. Much of the fundraising done this year helped to fund the cost of this trip. The cadets found the experience very moving and informational.
