On Sat 24 Jul, our First Aid team travelled to Beccles to take part in the South East District First Aid Competition, delivering an excellent performance throughout the event.

The team achieved second place in the team competition, demonstrating strong skills, teamwork and confidence under pressure. In the individual event, Lance Corporal Day secured third place, a fantastic personal achievement reflecting real commitment to training.

As a result of their high standards, the Cadets have now been invited to represent the District at the Area First Aid Competition in Sep.

A huge well done to all Cadets involved, and thank you to the Adult Volunteers who supported their preparation. The Unit is extremely proud of their efforts and looks forward to seeing them compete at Area later this year.

On Fri 24 Jul, the Unit had the honour of welcoming Major Horton, who has been recently announced as the South East District Officer (Desig). At the end of the evening, Major Horton formally presented the Unit with its Sea Cadet pennant for 2025, awarded in recognition of the high standards achieved throughout the previous training year.

The pennant reflects the sustained commitment of our Cadets and the professionalism of our Adult Volunteers, whose efforts ensure that training is delivered safely, consistently and to a high standard. This achievement is a testament to the collective dedication shown across the Unit.

We extend our sincere thanks to Major Horton for attending and for his continued support to the organisation. The Unit remains committed to maintaining these standards as we progress through 2026.

Cadet Corporal Champion had the huge honour of meeting HM The King during his visit to Cambridge Central Mosque on Mon 20 Jul. Corporal Champion was there as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets for Cambridgeshire and did a fantastic job representing both the County and Sea Cadets.

This occasion reflects the wider opportunities available to young people through the Sea Cadets. Experiences such as serving as a Lord Lieutenant's Cadet help develop confidence, leadership, public engagement skills and an understanding of civic life. Corporal Champion's involvement in such a significant visit demonstrates how these opportunities prepare young people to contribute meaningfully within their communities.

We are immensely proud of Corporal Champion's achievement and of the example she sets for other cadets. Her dedication and conduct highlight the impact of the Sea Cadets in supporting young people to grow, lead and represent their communities with distinction.

On Sat 11 Jul, Cadets and Adult Volunteers from the Unit participated in a Drumhead Service for the Sawston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion.

The event at Strawberry Fields was a real display of dedication. Despite the high temperatures, everyone turned out smartly, upheld the standards of the Corps, and represented the Unit with pride. Thank you to all who attended and supported the occasion.

On Fri 26 Jun, we welcomed the District Officer, Lieutenant Commander Janner‑Burgess, and members of the District and Troop teams for the annual Unit Review Visit. The visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate the Unit's progress over the past year, highlight the strength of training across all sections, and discuss priorities for continued development. The visit also included a series of awards recognising Cadet achievement and progression:

• Advancement to Lance Corporal: Royal Marine Cadets Day and House
• Junior Cadet Green Badge: Able Junior Cadet Burton; Junior Cadets First Class Akpan‑Etuk I, Akpan‑Etuk J and Malin
• Junior Cadet Yellow Badge: Junior Cadets First Class Akpan‑Etuk I, Akpan‑Etuk J and Crighton; Junior Cadets Aldous and Gallager Hirst
• Row 2 Qualification: Junior Cadets First Class Crighton and Malin
• Advancement to Junior Cadet First Class: Junior Cadet Aldous
• Advancement to Able Junior Cadet: Junior Cadets First Class Akpan‑Etuk I, Akpan‑Etuk J, Crighton and Malin

These awards reflect the hard work and enthusiasm shown by Cadets across the Unit, supported by the dedication of our Adult Volunteers. Congratulations to all of the Cadets recognised during the visit.

This evening was also poigniant as it marked one of Lieutenant Commander Janner‑Burgess' last visits to the Unit as District Officer as he is due to handover to his successor later this year. Thank you to Lieutenant Commander Janner-Burgess for all of the support shown to the Unit over our time in South East District.
