Unit Review

Unit Review

From the Commanding Officer:

Bridgwater Sea Cadets will be parading for its Unit Review on Tuesday 18 March 2014.  All cadets are required to attend and parade in No1 or Blues uniform.  If parents know in advance that this is not possible, please write a few short words explaining why to admin@bridgwaterscc.org.uk.  I would also like to remind all cadets to parade with their caps, not berets, between now and Tuesday 18 March so we can take a short amount of time each parade night to practice the Off/On caps drill.

Clipper Race

Clipper Race

In late summer 2013 members of the Sea Cadets were invited to apply for a place aboard one of the yachts taking part in this year’s Clipper Round The World Race.

Following months of training and a gruelling selection process, we are pleased to announce that PO (SCC) James Kenyon from Bridgwater Sea Cadet Unit was selected for one of the 12 coveted places.

James will be competing in Race 10, from the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre in China across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco in the United States, a total distance of 5,800 nautical miles.

James is now travelling to China and is due to board his yacht within the next few days, on or around 7 March 2014.  Race 10 starts on 16 March.

James will be competing aboard the yacht Mission Performance, skippered by Matt Mitchell, currently 12th overall.  Mission Performance got off to a slow start to the 2013/14 race with but began to improve steadily from Race 4.  Race 9 is currently underway and the yacht is presently lying in second place, just 10 nautical miles behind the leader with 854 nautical miles to go before reaching the finish line near Qingdao.

We’ll keep you updated regularly as James’s race unfolds.  Check back here to see how he gets on in the world’s biggest ocean.

House of Lords Debate

House of Lords Debate

In her role as South West Area's Navy Board Cadet APO Kathryn Jay attended the House of Lords for the debate about remembrance involving Cadets from all three Cadet Forces. The Sea Cadets were given the difficult motion called 'The UK has not learned from its experience' and they won with 73 votes. The day included a tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. APO Jay also helped lead Cadet workshops in the morning gathering the views of Cadets across the country and feeding them back to the Captain and CEO.

National Trafalgar Day Parade

National Trafalgar Day Parade

PPO Kat Jay attended the National Trafalgar Day Parade in London last weekend in her role as South West Area's Navy Board Cadet. She was given the privilege of carrying the casement ensign. When Admiral Lord Nelson was buried at St Paul's Cathedral, his coffin was draped by a white ensign. The Sailors present, removed the ensign and tore it into segments to share amongst them as a memento of the occasion. One of these segments is now encased and carried during the Parade to be placed at the foot of Nelson's column. She was escorted in this duty by Navy Board Cadets from other areas.
