The Queen's Baton Relay comes to North Ayrshire on Tuesday July 15th and CPO John Macdonald has been selected to carry the Baton. It all started when John was nominated by his work colleagues at North Ayrshire Council. After going through a tough judging panel he was chosen as one of the Baton Bearers for North Ayrshire. Out of the hundreds of nominees, John was chosen based on his outstanding contributions to volunteering within the local community.
The whole of Ardrossan Unit is very proud of his achievement and feel he is very deserving of this honour.
We are sure all of the Sea Cadet Corps will be behind John for his big day from London HQ, Northern Area Office and local Units within Clyde South District.
We caught up with John and asked how he felt about it. He replied, "It's a great honour and I feel very privileged that I have been selected to carry the Queen's Baton".
The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit ten locations on its one day tour of the area:
- Skelmorlie
- Largs
- Millport
- Kilbirnie
- Dalry
- Kilwinning
- Irvine
- Stevenston
- Saltcoats
- Ardrossan
The baton will arrive in North Ayrshire just eight days before the start of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
It will spend 40 days in Scotland touring areas in all 32 local authorities.
Around 100 batonbearers will carry the baton each day with the relay reaching more than 400 communities during its 40-day journey.
The Queen’s Baton Relay offers people a chance to be a part of the excitement, celebrations and countdown to the nation’s biggest-ever festival of sport and culture.
Communities will also be encouraged to play a part by staging a series of welcoming ceremonies as the baton proceeds from one location to the next.
