Top cadets win tough trophy

Top cadets win tough trophy

This weekend (2 -4 March 2012) the Gibraltar Cup Competition took place at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines, Lympstone in Devon. Forty eight cadets from the top six Royal Marines Cadets Detachments in the Sea Cadets, gathered for the all weekend event to compete to be the best detachment in the UK.

Winners this year were Eastbourne, the second year running. And it was a close run between Bristol Adventurer and Bedford, who came 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The competition is a series of challenges and assessments that test the skill, knowledge and fitness of the teams. Only a fit, dedicated, well trained and cohesive detachment takes the trophy.

Assessed on leadership, teamwork/spirit, discipline, communication, interpersonal skills, initiative, resourcefulness, plus the Sea Cadet spirit and values, the cadets demonstrated these in bucket loads as they worked their way through a series of tasks and challenges including; casualty evacuation, practical leadership, map reading and navigation (day & night) personal camouflage skills, ambush drills, shooting  and assault course.

The achievement of all the detachments is a testament to the dedication and skill of the volunteers who train them.

Captain Mark Windsor RN, and Captain of the Sea Cadet Corp said; “I really enjoyed the Gibraltar Cup this year. What a privilege for the cadets, Walking in the footsteps of the Royal Marine Commando role models they did themselves, their volunteer staff, parents, individual detachments, units and the Royal Marines Cadets proud.

“Well done to all and particularly Eastbourne who won the overall competition and a big thank you to the volunteers and Royal Marines staff for making this happen so safely and successfully”.

The Sea Cadets is Britain’slargest maritime youth charity working across the country in 400 towns with 14000 cadets aged between 10 and 18. Across the UK 117 units also have Royal Marines Cadets detachments with cadets between 13 and 18. Sea Cadets carry Commonwealth nation's flags ahead of Gloriana

54 Trinity 500’s, in diamond formation, carrying a flag for each of the Commonwealth nations will take the lead in front of Her Majesty’s barge, Gloriana, on the Thames on June 3 2012.
They will be joining over a 1000 vessels set to travel the seven mile route down the Thames in a spectacular celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The flotilla will pass under 14 bridges in ten separate sections each marked by vessels carrying playing musicians.

Londoners got a preview of the big day earlier in the month when 15 Trinity’s took to the water at Putney for a dry run of the course. 60 cadets from units across the region including, Rickmansworth, Southwark, Rugby, Eastbourne, Tewkesbury and Oxford maneuvered the craft with skill and dexterity impressing the Port of London Authority and MP Jim Fitzpatrick who were watching from a launch alongside.

On the day 300 cadets will motor from Wandsworth Bridge to Tower Bridge, helping the Queen to celebrate 60 years since her coronation.

London mayor unveils £1.3million commitment to help young Londoners at Sea Cadet unit

London mayor unveils £1.3million commitment to help young Londoners at Sea Cadet unit

Sea Cadets in Merton got a special visit from Boris Johnson, London Mayor today when he made a flying visit to the unit to meet 100 young people and volunteers from eight Youth Uniform organisations that make the YOU Matter Program. He was launching

In plans outlined by the Mayor today, thousands of youngsters will have the opportunity to join uniformed groups like the Guides, Scouts and Cadets. The £1.3 million programme, being run by the Safer London Foundation, will help young people to  develop vital skills, helping them to get a head start in life.

Thirty-eight new uniformed groups will be opened over three years, two-thirds of which will be in boroughs with areas of high deprivation. Already 100 new adult volunteers and 1,000 youngsters have been recruited. By the end of 2014 this will increase to 1,000 volunteers, which will enable 8,000 young people currently on the waiting lists across the capital to join uniformed groups.

The initiative is part of Team London, the Mayor’s strategy to harness volunteers to deliver key projects to improve the quality of life and opportunities of Londoners

The Mayor got stuck in and tried his hand at  drill commands, carried out an  inspection where he took time to talk to all of the young people involved.

“Uniformed groups are a fantastic way for youngsters to get involved in a myriad of activities, which will help equip them with the skills they need to succeed in life," Boris Johnson said.

"It’s a modern tragedy that so many of our young people are struggling to get a foothold in the jobs market and are drifting into crime. By instilling self reliance, discipline and a sense of competition, young people can aspire to a better future."

This was a great opportunity for the Sea Cadets to highlight their commitment to the YOU Matter program and to show of a superb Sea Cadet unit and what we do.
