North East Sea Cadets at Intu Metrocentre

Cadets from all across the North East from Northumberland, Tyne South and Teeside districts put their skills on display during a fun filled weekend at Intu Metrocentre on 31st August - 1st September in what was known as SeaCadetFest 2013.

Cadets paraded through the metrocentre to Exhibition Square where they went on to do several arena displays as well as showcase their skills amongst static displays.

Did you see us there?  Sea Cadets is open to young people between 10 and 18 - if you would like to join, come and see the CO at the unit on a Monday or Thursday evening!

Unit Adventure Training Weekend

Unit Adventure Training Weekend

At the end of August, the unit ran its first Adventure Training weekend for both junior and senior cadets.

During the weekend the cadets learned about pitching tents, camping, cooking on stoves and enjoyed two challenging walks based around Winshields, Hadrians Wall.  Cadets were awarded Basic Campcraft qualifications and juniors completed several green modules.

After positive feedback from the cadets, we hope to run more Adventure Training Weekends in the future!

McBeath Trophy Presentation

McBeath Trophy Presentation

North Shields unit have officially been presented with the McBeath trophy for 2012.
The trophy was founded by Rear Admiral John McBeath, who was honorary Commodore of the Sea Cadets between 1958 and 1975 and is awarded to a unit in the corps that has shown particularly meritorious performance over the previous year.
The trophy was presented to the Commanding Officer of TS Defender, Petty Officer Martin Sims - for whom the evening was doubly special having just passed his ODP 2 to become a Sub Lieutenant.
Rosemary McBeath, daughter of founder John, travelled to make the presentation, and the Northern Area Officer, Captain Peter Adams, was on hand to lead the applause as the trophy was handed over.
North Shields Sea Cadets has come through a particularly turbulent time of late, but PO Sims, aided by a dedicated team of adult volunteers, has steered his first command through the problems and TS Defender continues to go from strength to strength.

Juniors Win 5 a Side Football Tournament

The annual 5 a side football competition for the Northumberland District Sea Cadets was held on Saturday 8th December at Soccerdome in Royal Quays. Fielding a squad of 3 boys and 2 girls, the Junior section of the North Shields Sea Cadets won all their matches to achieve theirs and the Unit’s first trophy win for several years.

The North Shields Sea Cadets have been working hard over the past few months recruiting new cadets and staff to re-establish the Unit and the good work it is providing local children in the area. This latest victory shows what can be achieved through hard work and commitment.

Martin Sims, Commanding Officer of the Unit said “after only being together for less than six months, it is great to see how well our Juniors did against seasoned competitors from the other Units – we are all very proud of their achievement! This is the first of several competitions for the 2013 calendar year and a great start for the Unit.”

The Junior section is open to any 10 – 12 year old and runs every Wednesday evening from 7-9pm. Junior Sea Cadets are involved in a range of activities from rowing and sailing to treasure trails and baking.
