Dunbar Sea Cadets On Beach Clean Up Mission

Dunbar Sea Cadets On Beach Clean Up Mission

A group of Sea Cadets discovered and disposed of nearly 20 bags worth of litter during a mission to clean up their local beach.

Members of the Dunbar Sea Cadet unit took to the seaside at Pease Bay Beach on Saturday, 22 May, 2021 in one of their first community events of the year.

The Cadets, aged 10-18, joined Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) to collect litter during the tidy-up at the beach in the Scottish Borders, a bay situated at Verdant Leisure Park and close to the border with East Lothian as well as Cockburnspath, Cove and Dunglass.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the environmental expedition was the first opportunity the Dunbar unit had got to say thank you to Verdant Leisure Park CEO Graham Hodgson, who donated 60 high visibility vests to the youth organisation.

Dunbar Sea Cadets Commanding Officer and CFAV, Chief Petty Officer Martin Galloway, said:

The Sea Cadets have been involved with this beach clean in partnership with the Pease Bay Leisure Park. The company that donated our high visibility jackets - Verdant Leisure – who own the park, donated them free of charge so as a thank you we decided to do a beach clean on one of their parks.

Every year we look to do as many community events as we can to make an environmental impact and to make a difference.

The donation of vests will allow the unit’s Cadets and volunteers to feel safer when carrying out activities. Each year the Sea Cadets aim to achieve 1,290 hours of boating for Cadets and at times have to walk the boats down to the harbour, which includes travelling on busy roads. This extra added protection will allow them to keep all personnel safe and be seen.

Having recently joined Keep Scotland Beautiful - a charity which aims to improve Scotland’s environment, combat climate change, tackle litter and waste - Dunbar Sea Cadets are continuously on the lookout to find new ways of protecting the sea and their local environment.

Cadet Hannah said: We are doing a beach clean by picking up all the litter as we want to help the environment. We can all do something to help, even by just not dropping our rubbish and letting it go into the sea.

Cadet Natalie said: I’m currently completing my The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and I’ve been litter picking for that. I heard about this litter picking event today and I knew I needed to come down and help. There are lots of volunteers who have come down to help too.

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED

Commanding Officer, Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Martin Galloway at Dunbar Sea Cadets has highlighted the outstanding impact that the volunteers have done over the last 12 months as part of Volunteers’ Week, celebrated from 1-7 June 2021.

Over the last 12 months the volunteers at Dunbar Unit have been working exceptionally hard, not just in the professional working lives but as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer. They have been engaged with delivering a variety of skills including First Aid, Catering, Marine Engineering as well as preparing the unit to get back to face to face training.

Volunteers’ Week allows us to celebrate the great work that all our volunteers do. Dunbar Sea Cadets currently has 26 volunteers, these include the Instructional Staff, Unit Management Team and the Parent and Supporters Association.  Everyone has a very important part to play to ensure that we can operate.

Pippa Swan, Unit Chairperson said: “CPO Galloway and his staff have responded incredibly to the challenges posed to Dunbar Sea Cadet by the restrictions of the Covid19 pandemic.  They have ensured that every cadet has been kept fully engaged both socially and through virtual training sessions.  They have ensured that no cadet has been excluded through lack of IT and each cadet was visited personally by the Commanding Officer.”   Alan Mill Irving, Unit Vice Chairperson, echoed the acclaim for the team.  “Volunteer staff at the Unit have done a remarkable job.  Whilst so many groups have collapsed through the pandemic, Dunbar Sea Cadets has not lost a single member and our waiting list is longer than ever.  This is an absolute testament to the commitment of our volunteers and the quality of the Sea Cadet offer.”

Dunbar is part of the national youth charity, Sea Cadets which gives young people a new perspective. We broaden horizons and create possibilities. Working across the UK with 15,000 young people between 10 and 18, we help them see the world with confidence, gained through the challenge of nautical adventure and a Royal Navy ethos. Our aim is to help more young people to see the future that they want – and make that future happen.

The unit is open Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45pm – 9:15pm and meets at the Castle Park Barracks near the swimming pool. Visit: www.sea-cadets.org/dunbar to find out more.

DUNBAR SEA CADETS MADE SAFER THANKS TO DONATION

DUNBAR SEA CADETS MADE SAFER THANKS TO DONATION

Dunbar Sea Cadet Unit has received 60 High-Vis Vests thanks for to a donation from The Uniform and Leisurewear Company based in Morecambe.

The donation will allow the unit’s cadets and volunteers to feel safer when carrying out activities. Each year our unit aims to achieve 1,290 hours of boating for our cadets and unfortunately from time to time we have to walk the boats down to the harbour, which includes going on the roads. This extra added protection will allow us to keep all our personnel safe and be seen.

We also attend several community events each year and this will allow us to have a higher presence and be recognised by members of the community.

The Commanding Officer, Chief Petty Officer Martin Galloway, said: “I recently approached my CEO, Mr Graham Hodgson, at my workplace, Verdant Leisure Limited, as I knew he owned The Uniform & Leisurewear Company.  It has been a difficult year to fundraise and rather than asking for a monetary help I opted to ask him for a donation of High-Vis Vests. The kind donation will allow us to use our money for other essential items that the unit needs to purchase.  We are very thankful to Graham and his team for donating these to us and we look forward to doing a beach clean at Pease Bay Leisure Park, one of the parks owned by Verdant Leisure, very soon.”

Graham Hodgson said “When I received the email, I did not hesitate in helping Martin out. I know he dedicates a lot of time and energy in supporting the Sea Cadets in his voluntary capacity outside of his work. I am glad to have been of assistance to this worthwhile cause”.

DUNBAR SEA CADET UNIT RECEIVES FUNDING BOOST

DUNBAR SEA CADET UNIT RECEIVES FUNDING BOOST

Dunbar Sea Cadet Unit has received a £498 donation from Scotmid which will go towards the purchase of 2 new laptops.

The money will allow the unit’s volunteers to continue providing online training using the new equipment. The unit is currently involved with delivering training to over 30 cadets a week across the area from Dunbar to Grangemouth. The training is based on developing our young people to prepare them for a better future and to give them a head start in life.

The Commanding Officer, Chief Petty Officer Martin Galloway, said: “Throughout the lockdowns we have been trying to support our young people and their families through regular calls, transferring our syllabus to digital and engaging in emergency funding (MSSC emergency cadet grants) to get them tablets and dongles so that they can stay connected and have. However, our IT was very old to start with and we find ourselves with technology that has ceased to work. We are delighted for the very generous donation from Scotmid, It’s a dream come true for us”
