What we do

At City Of Derby we aim to give young people an experience that will help them grow into the person they want to be in a safe and friendly environment. Through various activities and adventures, we learn teamwork, respect, loyalty, self-confidence, commitment, self-discipline, honesty and how to be the best version of ourselves.

You learn life skills. I was 12, very quiet and shy. Cadets makes you find the confidence. You feel part of something special. Serafina, 15

We offer a range of different activities from sailing, windsurfing and powerboating - to rock climbing, camping, and music - plus, so much more! At City Of Derby you are also able to gain different qualifications that you can take with you once you leave Sea Cadets!

"It makes me feel I can do things others can't. I don't want to stay in my house every day. I want to see how the world is."

Shaun, 13

It is our priority to make sure that Sea Cadets is a safe environment young people can go to, to be themselves. Click here to find out more about how we safeguard our young people.

our unit - TS KENYA

City of Derby Sea Cadets (TS KENYA) offers a fantastic range of activities based onshore and on the water. We aim to deliver a minimum of 30 hours of boating activities to each cadet during the summer months through a mix of Sailing, Powerboating, Rowing, and Paddlesports. During non-boating months we offer activities such as adventurous training, shooting, map reading & navigation, first aid training, catering & stewarding, campcraft, and a whole host of other subjects.

our HISTORY

Derby Sea Cadets first opened over 80 years ago in 1942.

Like Royal Navy ships, which all have 'HMS' names, all Sea Cadet units have 'TS' names. Derby is named after HMS KENYA, which was a was a Royal Navy ship active from 1940 to 1962.

Our link to HMS KENYA is through the city itself, as the City of Derby funded and adopted the ship at the start of WW2. This historic link is marked by the resting of the Ships Bell in Council House, along with her memorial plaque.

City of Derby was previously named TS MALAYA, after the Royal Navy ship HMS MALAYA, a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship in service during the First and Second World Wars. She participated in the Battle of Jutland of the First World War as part of the Grand Fleet.

We are currenly also affiliated to HMS AMBUSH (S120), which is an active Royal Navy Submarine. She is the second boat of the Astute-class, and was launched in 2011 and is based at HMNB Clyde in Scotland. We recieve regular visits and communications from her crew. HMS Ambush is one of the most sophisticated underwater vehicles ever built.
