Lt Cdr (SCC) Simon Parker RNR

Lt Cdr (SCC) Simon Parker RNR

It is with great sadness that we report the loss of Lt Cdr Simon Parker who lost his battle with Cancer on 9th January 2014.
Simon was part of the unit for a great many years and was part of the team which was awarded the Canada Trophy in 1995. He became CO in the 1990's and was in this post for 10 years before moving onto become District Officer within London Area for a short while.
Following this position Simon returned to the unit and was on the Unit Management Committee.

Simon has been a part of TS Ark Royal for many years and will be remembered for all of the lives that he touched in so many ways.

Our thought and prayers go out to Simons family during this time.

We will pass on any tributes to his family.

A/C Daniel Pietruszewski represented the unit and Surrey DistrICT at the Southern Area Swimming competition.

Unfortunately the District competition was canceled twice due to unforeseen circumstances. A/C Pietruszewski was selected alomg with others from around the District and placed 4th in his class. He also formed part of the Senior class relay time and was pipped at the post unfortunately.

BZ to those who took part

National Band Competition

National Band Competition

On Sunday 17th August T.S. Ark Royal (Reigate Sea Cadets) competed at the Sea Cadets National Band Competition which was held at the prestigious venue of the Tower of London. The band, consisting of cadets and instructors aged 12 to 21, advanced through to the National Competition after an outstanding performance at the Southern Area Contest held at Chatham Historic Dockyard in June. At the National Competition they competed against bands from across the United Kingdom, all of whom have competed at various Area competitions. They advanced to Nationals alongside two other bands from Southern Area; Poole and Herne Bay.

The Band performed exceedingly well and after competing at such a high level they finished 4th place overall which is no mean feat.

The Band has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, and can be seen (and heard) in the local community regularly at events including Brockham Bonfire and the Remembrance Day service at Shaw’s Corner in Redhill. The band also led the Unit’s 75th Anniversary Parade through Redhill which culminated in a service in the Memorial Park in June of this year.

The T.S. Ark Royal Band holds rehearsals every Monday evening at their unit based on Hooley Lane, Redhill and gives young people the opportunity to learn new skills and instruments such as the Military Side Drum, the bugle and the glockenspiel. As well as band rehearsals, the Unit also holds regular parade evenings every Tuesday and Friday as well as boating sessions for sailing and rowing during the week at Mercers Park.

Area Regatta

Area Regatta

The unit was out in strength once again at the Southern Area Regatta held in Portsmouth on the final weekend of July.

On the Saturday our 2 man siling crew CDT Mitchell and CDT Harrington were representing the district and achieved 5th place despite a lack of wind first thing in the morning meaning they couldn't get out on the water until lunchtime. In contradition they were blown off of the water due to high winds later on that day.

The Sunday saw the units Power Boat Handling crew and Open Girls Rowing crew competing. The Power Boat Handling Team achieved 2nd place and this was by no mean feat as the points between 1st and 2nd were extremely close. The Open Girls Girls Rowing achieved 3rd place in again some extremely fierce competition.

Bz to all.

Presentation Parade

Presentation Parade

Every year, Reigate Sea Cadets hold their presentation parade , an event to which you, your family and relatives are Invited.

Many of you will be aware of the successes achieved by this unit at district, area and national competition and of the high regard in which the unit is held in the Sea Cadet Corp. The evening is not specifically about the unit’s achievements, it is about the cadets who achieve individual success, it is also about those cadets who may not excel in competition but show commitment, effort and improvement.
We also acknowledge the effort of those cadets who gave their time to the unit during our flag week and achieved the best results.

At the presentation evening you will see that the cadets of TS Ark Royal are involved in many activities and are a group of whom we can all be justifiably proud. Difficult to believe in some cases, but we do receive many comments on their personal presentation and how well behaved they are when at unit events.

Captain Peter Mansfield the President of Reigate Sea Cadets will make the presentations

Please try to attend and show support for your cadet, the uniformed staff, management team and Parents & Supporters association who are all volunteers are giving their time for your cadet.

Richard Smith

Chairman Reigate Sea Cadets

PS. Don’t forget your camera as photography of the presentations is welcomed and it may well be your cadet who is receiving one.

Area Regatta

Area Regatta

Following the success at the previous weeks District Rowing Time Trials the Open Boys and Open Girls Rowing crews competed at the Area Regatta along with the units Power Boat Handling Team.

The rowing teams fought of fierce competition and performed extremely well and as a result the Open Boys placed 4th and the Open Girls placed 3rd.

This year the Power Boat Handling teams had a choice of using a Planing boat instead of the traditionally used Displacement boats and the Surrey crew chose to use the Planing Boat. They were the only crew to choose this type of boat and they performed extremely well and eventualy placed 1st overall meaning they go on to joing A/C Lewis (competing in the Paddlesport part of the competition) in representing Southern Area at the National Combined Regatta on 29th September.

BZ to all who competed, it was an extremely long and hard day.

Surrey District Time Trials

Surrey District Time Trials

September has seen a busier start to the month where competitions are concerned for various reasons. First the Area Regatta was postponed, then the Area Paddlesports Regatta and finally the District Rowing Regatta postponed. All these competitions are happening at the beginning of September along with the Area Band Competition.

The District Rowing Regatta took place on Sunday, 9th September taking the form of each crew doing time trials. As this was the same day as the Area Band Competition Reigate’s Open Boys & Open Girls crews competed along with 1 other crew on Monday, 10th September during the evening. By the time they finished the last race you could just about make out the crews due to the light. Both crews did amazing times and are now through the Area Regatta on Sunday, 17th September to be held in Portsmouth.

Southern Area Paddlesports

Southern Area Paddlesports

Saturday, 7th September 2012 saw the Southern Area Paddlesports Regatta being held at Dreadnaught Reach in Reading. The original date for the competition was in July but due to the adverse weather and the fact the River Thames was running far too high and far too fast for safety reasons the competition had to be rescheduled.

Reigate had 4 Cadets included within the Surrey District team and A/C Kerry Lewis managed to take Gold in the Open Girls Single 2 mile marathon as well as the Open Girls Doubles 800 metre sprint with L/C Dallatt from Farnham.

A/C Marcus Francis and O/C Joel O’Flaherty took silver in the Open Boys Double 2 mile marathon whilst O/C Myles Jenkinson finished 2nd to take silver in the Junior Boys Doubles 500 metre sprint.

At present the silver medallists do not go through to represent Southern Area at the National Combined Regatta on 29th September but they may well be called up to form part of an Area Relay team. Gold medallists go through so A/C Kerry Lewis will be going through to represent the Area at the National Combined Regatta.

Very well done to all involved.

HMS Defender Visit

HMS Defender Visit

On Friday 31st August 4 Staff & 10 Cadets went down to visit The Royal Navy’s newest warship: HMS Defender. The Type 45 Destroyer is so new that she was still having parts put onto her deck. The visit was organised by Lt Bishop from the unit and an ex Cadet of the unit, Lt. Adam Robertson RN who is the Deputy Weapons Engineering Officer (DWEO). We saw aspects of the entire ship, in fact had she been operational we would not have seen as much as we did. The tour included a demonstration of how the fire fighting kit is worn, the living quarters, the bridge and so much more.

The day started with the tour and then continued by having lunch on board the warship. Following this all went from the newest warship onto the oldest of the Royal Navy’s Fleet: HMS Victory. Here the Cadets were shown around the ship and saw how the Royal Navy worked in Nelsons era.

All Cadets & Staff who went had an extremely enjoyable day and many thanks to Lt Robertson for his hospitality during the day.

Flag Week 2012

Flag Week 2012

Once again Reigate Sea Cadets held their annual 'Flag Week' where the carry out street collections throughout the Borough. This year it was conducted during the week 18-22nd June and a grand total of £2,592 was collected.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those members of the public for their continued support, without this it would be extremely difficult to operate.

This money will go towards the running costs of the unit, new equipment for the Cadets, fuel for transportation of Cadets to various activites and so much more and for this we thank you.

Following the success at the District Competition the Armed Guard, Piping Team and Individual Pipers went on to represent the District at the Area competition on 25th March.

This year the competition was held at HMS Sultan in Gosport and all did exceedingly well and the Guard and Piping Individuals fought off stiff competition but unfortunately didnt place within the top 3.

The units Piping Team placed 2nd for the 2nd consecutive year, no mean feat and a top result.

Armed Guard Commander Leading Cadet Jason Bailey outshone the competion to be named the best Guard Commander.

A brilliant result for all concerned, well done to all.

Boat Jumble

Boat Jumble

4 members of staff, 1 member of the PSA and 2 Cadets attended the Boat Jumble being held at the Kent County Showground held in Detling, Kent.

The idea was to try to sell on any items that were no longer required so new equipment can be sourced and purchased.
It total over £700 was raised through selling items including a small rowing boat and a Bosun dingy.

Many thanks to those who supported us at this event and BZ to those who made the day such a success.

Reigate's Piping Team performed brilliantly to place 1st as
well. The 2 individuals from Reigate had stiff competition

A brilliant result for all who attended.
