1942

Portrush Sea Cadets - Unit 274, was formed in Portrush. In the same year; the first Committee Meeting was held and enrolment of Cadets.

The Unit Headquarters was at Portrush Harbour, on the quayside where Portrush Yacht Club has its premises today.

Portrush Sea Cadets had the top floor of the building, the ground floor, it was used by the local coal merchant.

Coal was shipped into Portrush Harbour, the horse-drawn carts were loaded below the 'deck', resulting in considerable black coal dust percolating through the gaps in the timber floorboards.

There was a horse-trough outside the building, not only used for the horses to quench their thirst, also 'exercised' to 'christen' newly enrolled cadets!

1947

July, HMS DUKE OF YORK visited Portrush, the officers and crew were entertained by the committee, volunteer staff and cadets of the Unit.  The name (Training Ship) TS  DUKE OF YORK was adopted for the Unit.

The Unit is in constant communication with the members of the HMS DUKE OF YORK Association.

WATER BASED ADVENTURE

Portrush Sea Cadet take part in dinghy sailing in Coleraine also, in Weymouth, to a dive centre in Liverpool, our centres of excellence give you a chance to meet new friends, gain new skills and have a fantastic time.

As a Sea Cadet, you can try sailing, power boating, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing, plus diving with many courses accredited by the leading UK bodies including the RYA, British Canoe Union, British Sub Aqua Club and St John Ambulance. Plus, all our activities are led by well qualified instructors.

You can then put your skills into practice when you take part in our competitions and national regattas which take place across the country.

You can challenge yourself further by taking part in an offshore voyage and experience life at sea on one of our fleet of six vessels as they circumnavigate Britain's coastline.

Nautical training lies at the heart of being a Sea Cadet, offering great personal challenge and an opportunity to put your navigation and seamanship skills to the test together with other cadets from all over the UK.

The National fleet is made up of; 3 yachts, 2 power vessels; TS Jack Petchey, TS John Jerwood, and our flag ship TS Royalist, a 29 metre brig. Portrush Sea Cadets have on hand: 3 TRINITY 500 rowing boats, 2 ASC pulling boats, 8 canoes, 3 power-boats, 8 kayaks, 2 sailing dingies

LAND BASED ACTIVITIES

Portrush Sea Cadets have great fun with adventure training, going on expeditions, hill walking and treks that test navigation and endurance skills. You'll learn about camp craft; how to pitch a tent and cook outdoors, and some expeditions offer rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and kayaking.

There's also training in weapon handling and safety which takes place on military sites and is supervised by highly skilled Instructors. Also - there are target shooting competitions throughout the UK you can compete in. Drill, Piping and Music are traditional activities cadets take pride in and there are competitions and ceremonial events across the country which range from local fetes, carnivals and fundraising events, onward - to national events like Trafalgar Day Parade in London.

We also offer the chance to study for marine engineering at BTEC level, First Aid (St John Ambulance), seamanship, meteorology, radio comms and cookery. Speak to your local unit to see what they can offer.
