T.S. Venomous

The unit was first formed in Loughborough during 1939 with it's Headquarters building at St. Peter's Church Hall. There the unit remained for the duration of World War II, on conclusion of which an ideal site became available on the Grand Union Canal at Nottingham Road.

Nottingham Road was the home of T.S. Venomous for a period approaching 30 years. The 1970's proved to be a difficult time with reduced numbers of cadets, and the unit was under the threat of closure. Matters were made worse by the enforced move from Nottingham Road to a more secluded site in Beeches Road. The unit existed in a recycled cricket pavillion with just 4 staff and 17 cadets.

A change in circumstances came about in 1985 with the provision of a new building. In 1986 TS Venomous was awarded its first Burgee, thereafter the unit was regularly in the upper reaches of the pennant awards and reached the National Pulling finals three times between 1987 and 1992.

In 1990 the unit was affiliated with HMS Quorn. This affiliation remains strong over the years and has allowed many cadets the opportunity to experience time at sea.

In 1994 the unit was awarded its second Burgee and then in 1997 Burgee status was obtained again. In 1998 Loughborough achieved the Stephensons Trophy for Best Unit in the Eastern Area, but just missed out on the Canada Trophy for Best Unit in the United Kingdom.

On the 24th July 2001, His Royal Highness the Duke of York opened the new Boat shed.

Now TS Venomous looks ahead with optimism, conscientious staff and eager Cadets
