Boating Weekend at SCTC WEYMOUTH

Boating Weekend at SCTC WEYMOUTH

Four cadets joined Lt Milligan and others from across the district on a weekends boating course at the Sea Cadet Training Centre in Weymouth for a weekend of fun taster sessions. Lt Milligan took cadets for sessions in the power boats, and other staff took cadets for kayaking and sailing. Also during the weekend the cadets had the chance to try out rock wall climbing and then on Saturday night we all went down to the beach. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and six cadets will be spending a week at the centre during August. Thanks to Guildford unit for setting the weekend up.

Everyone slept on the way back!!

Royal Naval Parade

Royal Naval Parade

Well done to everyone at the unit for the award of a efficiency pennant following the recent Royal Naval Parade.  The unit was inspected by; Commander Richard Tarr, Royal Navy, on what was his first solo mainland inspection since being appointed Area Officer (South) in early June. Commander Tarr was greeted by the unit guard and then following colours he inspected the divisions. During the second half, visitors were treated to an evolution that centred on offshore sailing and navigation. The night was rounded off by a clear lower deck and buffet, which enabled Commander Tarr to speak to cadets and parents. Others visitors to the unit on the night included Mr Patrick Balfour from MSSC Headquarters,  the then, Lt Commander Patrick Balfour RN and our Commanding Officer Lt (SCC) K S Milligan RNR served together in the late 1980’s in  the assault ship HMS INTREPID .

During the evening £96.45 was collected toward the purchase of a Trinity 500 for the unit, taking the amount collected so far to £745.87

Four cadets have gained the Competent Crew qualification after attending boating sessions with unit boats officer CPO(SCC) K Farnes and other cadets have been gaining power boating and rowing qualifications with Major (SSC) M Weobley RMR down at SABS. We have got cadets attending the SABS weekends every week during the summer and cadets will also be attending boating courses over the summer at the SCTC Weymouth.

This leaves us without a padre and so we will be looking for someone to take over this very important role within the unit.

If you would like to volunteer as a Sea Cadet Chaplain please contact: the Staff Chaplain (SCC) Beau Brandie MBE RNR Tel: 01273 604687 staff.chaplain@btinternet.com

Unit Launches An Appeal to Raise Funds For A T500.

The unit has launched a fundraising appeal to raise the funds to purchase a trinity 500 (T500) Rowing boat to replace the existing ASC boat. The boat will cost £2500 and the unit will also need to purchase a trailer. The cadets have started to raise funds by putting their small change into jam jars and they are doing a sponsored walk in July, but more is needed, so if you have any ideas or would like to donate any money, then please contact Lt Milligan at the unit. You can keep an eye on the progress as we have put up a short in the quartermaster’s lobby in the front of the unit.
