Evesham Sea Cadets girls win Silver in national football finals

Evesham Sea Cadets girls win Silver in national football finals

For the first time, girls from Evesham Sea Cadets have won silver in a national annual indoor 5 aside football competition. The girls began by beating all the sea cadet teams in the district.  Then they went on to win at the South West Area event, so won a place at the nationals in Gosport.
The Evesham Sea Cadet girls played teams from Northern Island and from all over England and Wales.  The girls won every match until the final against the NW Area champions.  Unfortunately, the final match ended 1-1 and the girls were beaten in a sudden death penalty shoot-out.
The team was Rebecca Tolley, Megan Fellows, Zoe Didcote, Dianna Price, Lucy Fellows, Jessica Parker and Zara Pratley.
Captain of the team, Zara Pratley said “The girls were so thrilled to have finished runners up. We met some very good teams along the way.  To have lost on penalties was a little disappointing but it was a great result nevertheless.”
Evesham Sea Cadets meet on a Monday and Thursday evening from 7.00pm – 9.30pm at their headquarters in Shinehill Lane, South Littleton, Evesham.  New recruits between the ages of 10 – 18 are always welcome.  A Marine Cadet Detachment has also been established, another first for the town, and the Unit is looking for both adults to train as instructors, and young people who may wish to join.  For further information, come to the unit on a parade night, call 01386 833383 or visit our website www.sea-cadets.org/evesham/home.aspx

Green Light for the Marines

Green Light for the Marines

Evesham’s sixteen strong Royal Marine Cadet Detachment has been given the green light.  After a six-month probationary period, the Marine Cadets passed their inspection with flying colours.  They have now been given the official approval of the Captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Mark Windsor RN.
The twelve young cadets and four instructors were given the full backing from the two inspectors, Company Commander Major Ian Devenish and Company Sergeant Major Paul Wagstaff.  They said Evesham’s ‘embryo’ Detachment were very good and met all the criteria.
The Detachment Commander, Sergeant Sean Kent said “The fact we passed is a reflection of the enthusiasm and dedication of the current cadets.” He says the unit now needs to expand.  They have 12 cadets and four instructors, which is the minimum for a detachment.   The Unit is currently recruiting both sea cadets and marine cadets and they also need more adult trainers. “Past military experience is useful though not essential,” says Sergeant Kent.
Now they have gained official approval, marine cadets and staff will be able to get new uniforms and stores much to the relief of the Sergeant Kent. “Up to now, everything has been scrounged: begged and borrowed from other Units in the region,” he says.
During the probationary period, the cadets have received a lot of training, such as field training.  They took part in war games where they lived, slept and eat in the woods.  The Royal Marine Cadets also formed the escort party at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday last autumn.
The Royal Marine Cadet Detachment meets every Monday and Thursday, from 7.00pm – 9.30pm at the Sea Cadets headquarters in Shinehill Lane, South Littleton, Evesham.  The Unit is looking for both adults to train as instructors, and young people who may wish to join.  For further information, come to the unit on a parade night, call 01386 833383 or visit the Royal Marine Cadets’ website acoy.co.uk.

Two Evesham Sea cadets have been appointed to help the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire and the Mayor of Evesham during official ceremonies.

As the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire’s Cadet, Jordan Griffiths will be starting his new role in the limelight as he escorts Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex during his visit to the area next month.  “I feel proud and a little nervous about representing the cadet forces when Prince Edward comes.” Jordan teaches Drill and Ceremonial at the Evesham Sea Cadet unit.  At the moment he is working towards his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Leading Cadet Jodie Cotton has already assisted the Mayor of Evesham at the recent Remembrance ceremonies in the town.  The new Mayor’s Cadet says “I feel very privileged to have taken part in the wreath laying and church services to mark our respect for those who gave their lives to protect our country.”  Jodie has recently gained her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, she teaches First Aid and sailed on the tall ship TS Royalist earlier this year.

Commanding Officer Keith Field says “These two top cadets have earned us a great honour: it is the first time in our history that our unit has provided cadets to both the Mayor and the Lord Lieutenant at the same time.”

Evesham Sea Cadets Go Silver

Evesham Sea Cadets Go Silver

Ten Evesham Sea Cadets are celebrating this week after gaining their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
They were given their certificates by Councillor John Smith OBE and watched by their parents during a ceremony at the Sea Cadet's headquarters near South Littleton.
The cadets won their awards by learning and improving their rowing, canoeing and sailing skills.  They also did voluntary work in the community and raised money in aid of Help for Heroes.  However, the high spot for most were the camping and hiking expeditions to the Long Mynd in Shropshire and Crickhowell in Wales.
The successful cadets were Molly Keeler, Megan Baylis, Jodie Cotton, Gemma Atwood Amy Wilkenson, Jack Cole, Matthew Camp, Matthew Annis, Alex Harvey and Tim Johnson.
Five other cadets are working towards their Gold awards and have just returned from an expedition up Snowdon.  Nine cadets have enrolled on the Bronze award scheme.
The unit commander, Keith Field says "The Duke of Edinburgh scheme really stretches these young people and gives them the opportunity to test their own self-reliance."

Guard of Honour for former Royal Navy man

Guard of Honour for former Royal Navy man

Cadets from Evesham Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets helped to form a guard of honour this week for the funeral of former Royal Navy man Bernard Arthur Hughes.

Mr Hughes served in both The Royal Navy and The Merchant Navy before becoming a dedicated member of The Bretforton Branch of The Royal British Legion. He was also both an active and very generous supporter of Evesham Sea Cadets and as a unit we were both very proud and willing to attend and pay tribute to Mr Hughes.

Branch standard bearers were also present from local RBL branches and they were joined by The Sea Cadet standard which was bourne by Able Cadet Timothy Johnson.

The guard of honour compromised CO Keith Field, Leading Cadet Matthew Annis, Marine Cadet Paige Woodward, Able Cadet Jodie Cotton, Ordinary Cadet Mollie Keeler and Ordinary Cadet Daniel Ludlow.

Friend of Mr Hughes, Peter Stewart, commentated on what a wonderful tribute this was to Bernard who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The Marines are Coming

The Marines are Coming

Are You Tough Enough?
A new detachment of Royal Marine Cadets, the first ever in South Worcestershire, is setting up in the Vale this week. The group is looking for young people and adults who have a lot of bottle.  Based at the home of the Evesham Sea Cadets, the new group is for those who want an even bigger challenge.  Volunteers could soon be abseiling down a Bavarian mountain or finding their way across Dartmoor in Devon at night.
Tim Johnson, 15 years old, is switching from the Sea Cadets to the Marine Cadets. “It’s more physical, more disciplined and more demanding,” he says. “It tests your character.”
“We want the best of the cadets to be marines,” says Sean Kent, an ex-staff sergeant from the Royal Corps of Signals, who becomes the detachment commander this week. Their first meeting, their Parade night, will be this coming Monday, 8th August.
The detachment is also looking for other adults and young people, from 13 to 18 years old, to sign up.  The Marine Cadets will follow the spirit of the Royal Marines.
“They will learn all the water skills that the Sea Cadets do,” says Sean Kent. “But they’ll also do the land stuff.”
On the itinerary is military map reading, concealment and camouflage, shooting, and, of course, the assault course.
Paige Woodward, 14 years old, an ordinary cadet (which is one step up from being a cadet) says that is what has attracted her to the new detachment, that and the uniform.
“The blue jacket, for ceremonial wear, is much smarter,” she says. “But I’m really doing it because of the physical challenge.  I love running, climbing and shooting.”
Tim Johnson is looking forward to improving his field skills. “I want to sleep under the stars and build my own shelter and to be able to survive in the open.”
Some lucky marines will be invited to Exercise Bavarian Surprise in Germany where they will be able to go rock climbing, abseiling and kayaking.  Or the new recruits might join the real Royal Marines for a week of training, including running the infamous Bottom Field assault course which can make grown men and women cry.
Unit commander Keith Field says the new detachment will attract people from as far away as Stratford and Chipping Norton. “We see the Royal Marine Cadets as increasing the opportunities for young people in Evesham, the Vale and beyond.”
This year, marines will form the guard of honour at the war memorial in Evesham on Remembrance Sunday.
The Royal Marine Cadet Detachment meets on Monday 8th August, and then every Monday and Thursday, from 7.00pm – 9.30pm at the Sea Cadets headquarters in Shinehill Lane, South Littleton, Evesham.  The Unit is looking for both adults to train as instructors, and young people who may wish to join.  For further information, come to the unit on a parade night, call 01386 833383 or visit the Royal Marine Cadets’ website acoy.co.uk.

The Evesham cadets came first in the Pico and Topper sailing events and First in a 6.8 metres windsurfing competition.  Three others were also runners up.

Conditions on the water during Sunday’s regatta (3/7/11) were very difficult.  “There was virtually no movement in the air,” said the cadets’ instructor Kevin Keeler.  “Their sailing skills were really tested as they tried to catch the wind.”
