TS Tucsan Thrive Through Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Young people at TS Tucsan are taking on new challenges, building confidence, and gaining lifelong skills through the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award — one of the UK’s most respected youth development programmes.

The unit has earned a reputation as a leading centre for DofE in the district, with cadets regularly achieving Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards through a programme that combines adventure, volunteering, and personal development.

From expedition training in the countryside to volunteering in the local community, cadets at TS Tucsan are stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering what they are truly capable of.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gives young people a real sense of achievement,” said one volunteer instructor at TS Tucsan. “You see them arrive unsure of themselves, and by the end, they’re leading teams, navigating routes, and pushing their limits with confidence.”

The DofE programme at TS Tucsan is designed to be both challenging and rewarding. Cadets commit to developing new skills, improving their physical fitness, volunteering in their communities, and completing expedition challenges that test teamwork and resilience.

For many, the expeditions are a highlight — offering a sense of independence and adventure that stays with them long after they finish.

“At first I was nervous about the expedition,” said one cadet. “But once we got going, I realised how much I could do. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

Parents also recognise the impact the programme has on their children, particularly in building confidence and independence.

“It’s amazing to see the difference,” said a parent. “They come back more organised, more confident, and proud of what they’ve achieved. It’s not just an award — it really develops them as people.”

Beyond the award itself, participation in DofE at TS Tucsan opens doors to new opportunities. Cadets gain valuable skills in leadership, communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation — all of which are highly regarded by employers, colleges, and universities.

“The skills you gain through DofE stay with you for life,” added a unit leader. “It’s not just about finishing — it’s about the journey and the personal growth along the way.”

TS Tucsan continues to welcome new members who want to challenge themselves, make friends, and be part of something inspiring. With strong support from experienced volunteers and a proven track record of success, it’s an ideal place for young people to begin their DofE journey.

“If you’re thinking of joining — just go for it,” said a current cadet. “You’ll surprise yourself with what you can achieve.”

For those looking for adventure, achievement, and personal growth, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at TS Tucsan offers an experience like no other.

Connahs Quay Moves Home!

Connahs Quay Moves Home!

Tonight was our first night at the Sea Cadet Hall on Dock Road, the original home of Connah’s Quay Sea Cadets. After 12 years at St Mark’s Church Hall, it’s great to be back where it all began.

We spent some time working through the Colours routine to find what suited the space and the team, a few run-throughs later and we had it sorted. Cadets and staff were in great spirits and really pleased to be in a clean, fresh new unit.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in getting us here, especially the Chair and other members of the UMT, unit staff, parents and cadets who helped move a serious amount of kit, uniform and equipment. We couldn’t have done it without all the support 💚💙

We’re looking forward to getting everything up and running again after what’s been a long few months of planning and preparation.

Queens Honour for Connahs Quay Cadet

Queens Honour for Connahs Quay Cadet

Our Very Own Petty Officer Cadet Challenger Honoured in Queens Honours list!

We are so very proud of POC John Challenger BEM, 17 who has been given a British Empire Medal in the Queens birthday Honors 2020.

John is believed to be the first current cadet named in a monarch’s Honours List, certainly in recent years.

He ran a weekly virtual cadets quiz during lockdown and represents their voice among adults, raising awareness of the difficulties some face in getting connectivity. John joined Connah’s Quay Sea Cadets in 2013 at the age of 10, achieving the highest rank of Petty Officer Cadet at 16 – the earliest age possible.

John said, “When I got the email, I had to read it 2 or 3 times and it was quite a shock. I’m very proud to be recognised but this is for everyone within Sea Cadets and the impact it has on young people.”

“A lot of what I’ve been doing has been through my unit and my Area and they’ve pushed me to do these things, to become the person that I’ve become.”

Admiral Tony Radakin CB ADC, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, said, “This is an outstanding achievement at such a young age and a real example of the importance of the Sea Cadet Corps.  John has demonstrated the qualities of selflessness, dedication and teamwork that epitomise the whole of the Royal Navy family, and he has helped so many young people in North Wales, the North West and across the UK at a difficult time.”

“He has gone far above and beyond his duties as a First Sea Lord cadet and I am delighted that he has been honoured with this award.”

To quote the Royal Navy, POC Challenger was born in Flintshire, but was made in the Sea Cadets!
