COURSES, CAMPS
AND COMPETITIONS

Courses

A great deal of training takes place at a local level, but our National Training Centres also offer exciting opportunities for cadets and volunteers.

At HMS Raleigh in Cornwall we offer a wide range of cadet courses including those which offer unforgettable experiences such as simulating being on a sinking ship, working as a fire fighter or completing an assault course.  Fun activities are not forgotten with swimming and visits to theme parks as well as powerboating and sailing at the nearby Jupiter Point.

At HMS Excellent in Portsmouth adults can improve their instructional, leadership and management skills from basic to advanced level and HMS Caledonia in Rosyth provides a great regional alternative for those based in Scotland, Northern Ireland or the North of England.  Caledonia also has fantastic boating facilities at the nearby Port Edgar.  We also have a fully accredited national diving centre in Liverpool where cadets and adults can learn to dive safely and gain recognised qualifications.

Finally, our brand new state-of-the-art sail training centre in Weymouth is close to the harbour and overlooks the site of the 2012 Olympic Regatta.  It is our premier centre for all waterborne activities as well as training in boat maintenance and marine engineering.

Camps

Camps are run at district, area and national level. These can be a weekend, a whole week during school holidays.  They give cadets a chance to meet and make new friends and take part in activities that may be beyond the resources of their own units. They can gain additional qualifications but sometimes they are there just for the fun, adventure and camaraderie. Some national camps take place on military bases where cadets can experience all sorts of unique activities and get a real insight into what goes on ‘behind the fence’.

Competitions

There are a number of competitions taking place throughout the year. These include the Gibraltar Cup competition to find the best Marine Cadet Detachment in the Country, the National Drill, Piping & Colour Party Competition where all the six Areas & Northern Ireland compete to become the National Drill Champions, the Combined Regatta, where all six Area & Northern Ireland compete in boat handling, pulling (rowing) races and canoeing races, and the National Sailing Regatta where all the six Area & Northern Ireland compete in sailing and windsurfing races.
