Lord Lieutenant Cadet Ceremony

Cadets and Staff attended the ceremony at Staffordshire County Building on the 18th April.  LC Priestland and Cpl Yardley were thanked for their services in 2011 and presented with a certificate.  POC Stoneman was presented with her Lord Lt badges as she took up the position for 2012.

 
Captains Visit

Captains Visit

The captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Mark Windsor, came to TS Modwena on Thursday 15th March for an informal visit.  He was joined by Burton's MP Andrew Griffiths.  Both were given a tour of the unit and had a chance to talk to cadets as they visited their classes.  After evening colours Captain Windsor presented the McCarroll Trophy to Major Machin, X-Ray company commander, who started his career as a cadet at Burton.  This award is given to the top Royal Marine Cadet Instructor.  The citation that went in to support the award process was read out by Cadet Cpl Yardley.  This finished a very good night for Burton Cadets on a high.

After winning the Notts and Derby District competition, cadets from TS Modwena spent the weekend of 27th - 29th January at Beckingham and were at Newark Showground for the Area competition.  The cadets came a very respectable third.  Everyone associated with TS Modwena are very proud of them.

After over seven years in charge at TS Modwena, SLt Nichol stood down as Commanding Officer of Burton on Trent Sea Cadets with effect from 1st February 2012.  He is not leaving the corps but moving on to a District appointment.  All cadets and staff wish him well in his new position.  CPO(SCC) Stoneman is taking over as OIC of the unit.

 
RBL Rememberance Parade

RBL Rememberance Parade

TS Modwena attended the annual Remembrance parade with cadets from the ACF and the ATC. The parade marched through the streets of Burton, followed by a service at St Modwen's Church and a ceremony at the war memorial. 

Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, commander in chief (fleet), then took the salute as the parade, led by Newhall Brass Band, returned to the Town Hall.

Four cadets from TS Modwena were in London with other cadets from Trent District at the National Trafalgar Parade. Each year a different district is selected to represent their Area.

TS Modwena hosted this year's Trent District Trafalgar Parade.

Sunday 16th October saw over 200 cadets march through the streets of Burton upon Trent to commemorate Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805.

A service was held at St Modwen's church and the salute was taken by Cdr John Liversey RN, commanding officer of HMS Victorious.

 
National Regatta

National Regatta

Eastern area attended the National Regatta at Albert Docks in London on Saturday 3rd September.

LC Stoneman and Cdt Harrison were there as part of the team.  LC Stoneman was in the double kayak race with AC Love-Twelves of Nottingham unit and Cdt Harrison was in the sprint relay.  Both made TS Modwena's Staff and cadets proud with a 4th place for LC Stoneman and a 5th place for Cdt Harrison.

This was the first year for quite a while that TS Modwena had cadets in the finals - Well done to both girls.

 
PO Kerrigan's Last Night

PO Kerrigan's Last Night

PO Kerrigan paraded for the last time as a member of TS Modwena on Thursday 1st September.

He has been a valuable member of the ships company and will be missed, but he is not leaving cadets.  PO Kerrigan has moved house due to work and is going to parade with TS Amazon - Hinckley Unit - our lose is their gain.

Good Luck Gareth for the future from everyone at Burton.

 
Eastern Area Summer Camp

Eastern Area Summer Camp

The first week of August saw TS Modwena joined by 178 cadets and staff from other units of Eastern Area on HMS Bristol (Portsmouth Harbour Training Ship) for the annual summer camp.

The weather was hot and sunny and the cadets achieved proficiencies, specialisation qualifications and a good week was had by all.

Affiliated Ship Visit

Monday 18th July saw members of Her Majesty's Submarine VICTORIOUS, our affiliated ship, visit the Unit.  They spent time talking with the Cadets and Instructors and we hope they enjoyed their visit as much as we did.

 
Eastern Area Regatta

Eastern Area Regatta

Well done to the paddlesport teams representing the District at the Area Regatta held at Girton Sailing Club on the 16th and 17th July.

The Junior teams each came in second place over all in their respective events. The Open Boys 7th and the Open Girls, 4th.

All of our Cadets were placed in their races with the Open Girls Doubles team of LC Stoneman (Burton) and AC Love-Twelve (Nottingham) winning theirs and will be representing the District at the Nationals.

 
Eastern Area Junior Regatta

Eastern Area Junior Regatta

Girton Sailing Club just outside Newark, hosted the Eastern

Area Junior Regatta.  50+ Juniors and 30 Staff were under canvas

from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th July.  Friday night was wet, but

 the sun came out on Saturday and stayed until the end.

The Juniors were involved in Sailing, Canoing and Team building,

which included raft building. A enjoyable weekend was had by all.

Trent District Regatta

Trent District Regatta

Sunday 5th May Trent district attended Nottingham Unit for

its Regatta.  Well done to our rowing teams, both the

Open Boys and Junior Boys were runners up in their class.

Very well done to the Paddlers in both the Junior Boy and

Junior Girls individual events. MC2 Bowler come in first

place in both the Sprint and the Marathon and Cdt Harrison

came in first place in the Sprint.

Pier Cellars - Trent District Camp 2011

TS Modwena joined the rest of Trent District on the district camp to Pier

Cellars near Torpoint, 55 cadets attended along with staff.  All who

attended had a days walking, a day boating and for the first time in 15

years cadets were allowed to run the Obstacle course with aggression

(not allowed to say assult course).  Everyone also enjoyed a day out in

the fishing town Looe.

New Mayor of East Staffordshire

Sunday 22nd May saw Burton Sea Cadets and staff parading to

celebrate the new Mayor of East Staffordshire.  Cadets and Juniors

from TS Modwena, together with Air Cadets from the local unit

marched through the streets of Burton with O/C Moorby escorting

the Mayor as her Mayors Cadet for 2011.

Burton Marine cadets were involved in SRMOs from Friday 20th to

Sunday 22nd May. Our cadets were outstanding - once again

coming top and proving they are the best Royal Marine Cadet

Detachment in X Ray Company!

A big well done to all involved.

Trent District Training Weekend

6th to 8th May saw Trent District hold a training weekend at

TS Modwena. Cadets from Burton, Long Eaton and Mansfield

units attended and were taught Meteorology, Communications

and Cook Steward.

It was another good weekend for cadet qualifications.

Admiral Sir Trevor Soar KCB OBE, CinC Fleet, attended Burton Sea

Cadets prize giving on the 28th April with Lady Soar. The visit was

arranged through our president, Cdr T.K. Hornby Priestnall VRD. RNR.

The Admiral, President of Haringey Sea Cadet Unit has close ties to

Burton, last visiting us in July 2008.

 
Easter Camp

With HMS Bristol still away, Trent District held

their Easter Camp at TS Orion (Nottingham Unit).

Burton had 8 cadets who between them obtained

13 qualifications.  Congratulations to all who attended.

After all the hard work there was even time to have

some "serious fun" and cool down on a very hot weekend!

Leading Cadets Offshore

Leading Cadets Priestland, Smith and Stoneman had a week

offshore on TS City Liveryman, one of the Sea Cadets Yachts.

They sailed from Weymouth to Plymouth and all three gained

their RYA Competent crew.  Congratulations to you all.

Wednesday 20th April saw L/Cpl Yardley and LC Priestland confirmed

as Lord Lieutenants Cadets for Staffordshire.  LC Priestland was away

at sea on the SCC Yachts so was unable to attend.  Even so, eleven

members of the Ships Company supported L/Cpl Yardley in his

investiture.

The Band of the Royal Marines were at Burton Town Hall for a concert.

Cadets and Staff from TS Modwena were asked to assist and attended

without question. Many people, including the Officer in charge of the

band, passed comment on how smart and helpful our cadets were.

Well done to all who attended.

 
Busy Weekend

Busy Weekend

The weekend of the 25th - 26th March was very busy.

Our juniors joined other junior cadets from the district in a weekend at

Lincoln unit where they had a great time doing arts and crafts for

Mothers Day, Easter and even found time to go swimming. At the same

time Leading Cadet Stoneman was at Mansfield unit doing Marine

Engineering and the rest of the cadets, staff and unit helpers were at

Morrisons in Swadlincote bag packing.

Saturday March 19th was a special day at TS Modwena.

 The two new pulling boats, took to the water for their maiden voyage.

On board to witness the event were the parents of the Cadets;

the Mayor and Mayoress; the Deputy Mayor and

 Consort of East Staffordshire Borough Council; Members

of the Burton Lions; Members of the Burton Oddfellows and

Principle Sponsor Staffordshire County Councillor Kathy Lamb.

Able Cadets Priestland and Stoneman attended Long Eaton unit 11-13

February on their Leading Cadet Board.

Both cadets worked hard prior to attending and both passed.

TS Modwena Cadets won the district drill competition and went on

to the Eastern Area competition at Newark show ground where they

missed out on second place by a single point.

L/C Cherry won the best squad commander.

 
Marine Detachment Success

Marine Detachment Success

Burton Marine Cadets won the Winthrop Trophy, awarded to the best

Royal Marine Cadet SRMO team in the area.

This is the third time Burton Marine Cadets have won this trophy in

four years. Our cadets now go to the Royal Marine Commando

 training centre at Lympston in March to represent Burton and

Eastern area.
