Who We Are

The first Sea Cadet unit was established in 1854 at Whitstable in Kent, created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme. Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the Unit Headquarters.

The tradition of community - based Sea Cadet Units continues today with 400 across the UK each with charitable status enabling them to raise funds to meet their running costs. All Units are members of the Sea Cadet Corps and are governed by the national charity MSSC - the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

We work partnership with the Royal Navy under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and receive corporate support from commercial shipping companies and the Maritime sector. Our core purpose is to celebrate Britain's maritime heritage and contribute to its future development by supporting young people as Sea Cadets.

Brentwood Sea Cadets have been part of the local community since 1942. We are a uniformed and disciplined youth organisation offering both waterborne and land based adventurous activities for young people between the ages of 10-18 years, as well as opportunities to acquire skills and externally recognised qualifications. Cadets can gain a variety of boat handling skills including sailing, power boating, kayaking, pulling (rowing) and windsurfing, all to nationally recognised RYA and BCU standards.

Brentwood Sea Cadets take part in many local community events such as the South Weald Festival, Strawberry Fair, Armed Forces Day Parade and the Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service. You may also see us from time to time out and about in the community on fund raising activities either bag packing at the local supermarket or at other local venues raising funds for good causes such as Help for Heroes or the British Legion Poppy Appeal.
