Who We Are

The first Sea Cadet unit was established in 1854 at Whitstable in Kent, created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme. Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the Unit Headquarters.

The tradition of community - based Sea Cadet Units continues today with 400 across the UK each with charitable status enabling them to raise funds to meet their running costs. All Units are members of the Sea Cadet Corps and are governed by the national charity MSSC - the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

We work partnership with the Royal Navy under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and receive corporate support from commercial shipping companies and the Maritime sector. Our core purpose is to celebrate Britain's maritime heritage and contribute to its future development by supporting young people as Sea Cadets.

TS Mary Rose is Basingstoke's best kept secret, we have been at Harlech Close Winklebury for many years and although the Unit is a little small it has served the Cadets & Staff well, and continues to do so. Monday & Friday evenings are a busy time for Cadets, meeting their oppos (naval term for friends) before the official duties of the evening, starting with colours, its then time for some exciting instruction, maybe navigation or marine engineering, at 20.00 hrs its time for 'stand easy' this is the naval phrase for tuck break, after this its then time to finish up the lesson before a tidy up and Evening Colours to finish off the official duties of the evening. During Spring, Summer & early Autumn the action really gets going as we travel the short distance to Burghfield Lake in berkshire, here we sail our Laser pico, Wayfarer & kestrel, we also have a power boat and rowing boat, this is the highlight of the week and we spend the whole day at the lake.
