Coastal Sail Training - 26th to 28th June 2015

As we do most of our sailing at Stithians Lake, we thought it would be advantages to do some coastal sailing.  During the weekend we had our more experience sailors attend and undertake some sailing at sea.  Our aim was to sail to the Helford from Falmouth, but due to the wind direction we only made it as far as Castle Beach where we anchored for lunch.  We then sailed back to the unit.

A great weekend was had by all.

During August 2013, we spent a week down at Stithians Lake for our Summer Camp.  Unlike the previous year, the weather forecast was quite good so we pitched tents rather than returning to the Unit each night.  The week consisted of cadets split into groups to rotate around the activities, which included sailing, walking, visiting Tehidy Woods, and training for Assistant Beach Lifeguard.  Many qualifications were gained during the week, and all had a fantastic time (staff included!)

Duke of Edinburgh Award 2013

Duke of Edinburgh Award 2013

The start of the season was a camp at Stithians Lake where we pitched by the lake on a cold April day. The cadets learnt how to pitch tents, how to use different stoves, how to use a map and compass, and how to pack a ruc sack. Our first night was cold but the second was -5c !! We woke up to thick frost on our tents. I thought this would finish them – No – they came back for more.

We camped at different sites throughout the season, our favourite being Henry’s on the Lizard. Here the site boasts a purpose-built fire pit of which we have enjoyed a marshmallow evening around. We have also camped on National Trust land at Poltesco Valley and Tremayne Quay on the Helford, these sites have limited facilities so it is as close to wild camping we go.

The cadets have enjoyed the walks and investigating areas of interest. The final walk took them through Trelowarren Woods and out to Tremayne Quay, although it was very hot we all had a very good weekend and a successful expedition.

Well done to the teams for this year’s expedition. I look forward to next year’s adventure. My thanks to PO Howle and Mick Cunningham for their support.

Unfortunately the programmed flying display could not take place due to the low cloud base, but the crowds did see a display by the RNLI and the Search and Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. There was also a Concert in the evening by the Royal Marine bad, which the cadets also attended.

WPA Launch at Stithians Lake

On 28th April 2013 at Stithians Lake, the Lord Lieutenant for Cornwall and Sarah Newton MP along with WPA representatives and Captain Sea Cadets attended a ceremony to bless the new boats provided by WPA funding. Cadets from the five Cornish units (Falmouth & Penryn, Penzance, St Austell, Truro and Padstow) took to the water for their maiden voyage after the blessing.

"This project goes beyond the Cornwall's 140 cadets by offering taster sailing days; the more I’ve learnt about Sea Cadets, the more I am in awe of the dedication of their volunteers.’  Charlie McEwan director of good causes for the Western Provident Association (WPA) Benevolent Foundation, who made the donation, said: "WPA Benevolent Foundation promotes healthy activity amongst the young and following the Sea Cadets performance at the Jubilee River Pageant last year, we were inspired to evolve a Cornwall project to develop the sailing centre at Stithians Lake and fund scholarships for cadets to experience a voyage offshore."

On 16th August 2012, eleven cadets and three staff members were invited on board both HMS Mersey and HMS Enterprise for guided tours.  HMS Mersey is one of the Royal Navy's patrol vessels, used for fishery protection and the prevention of drug trafficing and piracy.  It is also one of the leading training vessels for young warfare officers and sailors returning back to sea before joining their new draft.  The cadets were shown around the ship and given various demonstrations, including first aid, fire fighting and the ship's armoury.

HMS Enterprise is an Oceanographic and Hydrographic survey ship for the Royal Navy.  Again, the tour consisted of various demonstrations involving fire fighting and sea survival.  The cadets were allowed to dress up in all "the gear", learning about different hoses and their uses, and then they moved on to the surveying equipment.  They learnt how the equipment worked and what is was used for, and were especially impressed by the ship's very own goldfish!  Fun was had by all during which a great deal was learned about the Royal Navy and its different roles.

RNP - 16th May 2011

On Monday 16th May, our Unit had its Royal Naval Parade (RNP), where we were inspected by the Area Officer for the Southwest, Cdr John Rees RN. He attended as a VIP, inspecting the Guard before Colours, and then inspecting the rest of the cadets afterwards. The cadets then performed an evolution involving a race between our three Pulling (rowing) boats on Penryn River, just behind our Unit.
The RNP is also used to ensure that all the required standards of training and safety are being met, and an award is made based on that assessment. Those units who make the standard are awarded a Pennant, and those who exceed the standard are awarded a Burgee.

We are proud to say that, once again, we have been awarded a Burgee!  Well done to all the cadets and staff who helped the Unit achieve this.

End of Boating Season 2010

End of Boating Season 2010

The lift-out of the Unit boats during October draws an end to the 2010 boating season and marks the start of a long winter of maintainance. Our boats are lifted out free of charge by one of our sponsors, Mr Barry Rogers of Argar Services.
The 2010 boating season has been quiet compared to past years due to the boats going into the water late, building works and other events. But during the 2011 season we hope to get back on track and get the cadets back out on the water achieving lots of qualifications. We will also have a new addition to our fleet, the Trinity 500 which will be replacing our ASC pulling boat. We will still retain the other ASC which will be rigged as a sailing boat.

We wish him well in his future posting, and he has assured us that he will stay in touch. Our affiliation remains intact on his departure, and his replacement, Lt Cdr Matt Flegg, has promised to continue his work with us.

Thankfully, this virus is no longer an real issue in this country but it does still effect the people of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nothern India and Nigeria. After the planting was complete, the cadets had free entry to the Eden Project domes for the rest of the visit.

During the evening the Junior Cadets performed their "Sods Opera", and the evening finished off with a disco from our resident DJ (PO Chris Jorey).

Coxswain / IM Weekend - 14th to 16th November 2008

Coxswain / IM Weekend - 14th to 16th November 2008

Over the weekend, we held a coxswain and supervised coxswain course for pulling and a adult Instructional methods (IM) course at the unit. We had 4 of our cadets on the pulling course along with 4 cadets from the St Austell unit and 2 from the Penzance unit. Afloat we had two ASCs, one from our unit and the other kindly lent to us for the weekend by Cornwall District Sea Cadets. By the end of the weekend there were 5 new coxswains and 2 new supervised coxswains - well done to those cadets.
We also had one of our unit staff (Mrs. Mitchell) on the IM course along we three more adults from around district and they were all successful in gaining an approved grade in Instructional Methods. Congratulations to them.

BSAC Ocean Diving - 8th November 2008

BSAC Ocean Diving - 8th November 2008

Three cadets who passed their BSAC Ocean Diving qualification earlier in the year took to the water again for their 20 metre qualifying dive. Under the watchful eyes of both a BSAC Senior Instructor (John Adams) and our own PPO(SCC) Chris Clayton (BSAC Instructor), the cadets were accompanied down on a dive to the SS Stanwood wreck in the Carrick Roads. Our unit RIB took the team from the unit out into Carrick Roads, and acted as the dive boat for the duration. Although the visibility was not that great, all three cadets had a good look around the wreck, and achieved their 20 metre goal.

Stage 3/4 Sailing Weekend - 31st Oct to 2nd Nov 2008

Over the first weekend of November, 12 cadets attended a sailing training weekend. Some cadets were training towards their YSS Stage 4 and some their YSS Stage 3. The weekend was hampered by bad weather but we still managed to get out on the water to do some sailing. On the Saturday the cadets sailed bosuns, kindly supplied by Culdrose Sailing Centre. On the Sunday the cadets sailed the Picos and Toppers. The weekend consisted of both waterborne and land-based training and, as always, these weekends could not happen without the volunteer staff at the unit giving up their time.

Cornish Cruising Week - 26th to 31st October 2008

Cornish Cruising Week - 26th to 31st October 2008

On Sunday 26th October, five of our cadets and a member of staff set off on a 5 day training week onboard a yacht supplied by Mr Nick Jordon of Cornish Cruising, a local sea training school. This was now the third week that cadets from our unit have taken advantage of this training, and it is getting ever more popular.
As this was the third trip for A/C Mitchell, A/C Paull and A/C Close, they were working towards their RYA Day Skipper qualification. For the other two cadets, O/C Townsend and O/C Macwilliam, this was their first trip and they gained their RYA Offshore Competent Crew qualification at the end of the week.
During the week the cadets carry out various manoeuvres with the yacht, do chartwork and have to cook for themselves, so you get some interesting meals on board! The cadets mostly sail around the Falmouth area but depending on the weather can sometimes get to Fowey or even Plymouth.

District Junior Weekend - 24th to 26th October 2008

District Junior Weekend - 24th to 26th October 2008

Over the weekend, eight of our Junior Cadets went to HMS Raleigh, along with three of our senior cadets and five members of our staff, for a Cornwall District Junior Cadet Activity Weekend. The weekend gave our Junior cadets the chance to mix with Juniors from other units in Cornwall, and to take part in Seamanship activities, Drill, Piping, Powerboating and Canoeing. The Juniors were split into three divisions of ten Juniors, with three senior cadets and one staff divisional officer per division. The Divisions then rotated around the activities (which were being led by other members of staff) to give them an insight into just some of the things they can do within the Sea Cadet Corps. All the cadets had a great time, and went home exhausted but happy (as were the staff!).

Competent Crew Weekend - 26th to 28th September 2008

Competent Crew Weekend - 26th to 28th September 2008

This weekend, some of our cadets took to the water in Falmouth harbour to undertake training and assessment for the Sea Cadet Competent Crew qualification. J/C Littlejohn, J/C Lobban, J/C Molland and J/C Skinner took the Junior Pulling Boat, and A/C Littlewood G, A/C Littlewood V, Cdt Slater, Cdt Watson and NEC Mitchell-Fryer were in the ASCs (seen here). Our cadets were joined by two from the St. Austell unit, and the three boats were coxswained by A/C Paull, A/C Rawlins and O/C Linthwaite.
By the end of the weekend, all the cadets going for their Competent Crew qualification reached the standard required. A bonus for the coxswains was that the assessor was so impressed with them that A/C Paull and Rawlins were awarded their Coxswain qualification, and O/C Linthwaite achieved her Supervised Coxswain. Well done to all, and thanks to all the staff, particularly PO(SCC) Chris Jorey who worked long and hard to organise this weekend.

RFA Argus Visit - 16 September 2008

On the back of supporting the Cornwall MSSC event onboard RFA Argus on the 29th August, 14 of our cadets were invited back onboard for a full tour of the ship. The tour began with the usual safety brief, followed by a walk out onto the flight deck where the cadets stood on one of the aircraft lift points and descended into the aircraft hanger below. They were then given a tour of the hospital facilities on the Argus and let loose on the bridge! The next stop was the "Ops Room", and finally they visited the "Flyco" room, from where the aircraft operations are controlled. Many thanks to Chief Officer Steve Donkersley RFA for allowing us to visit, and to Third Officer Neil Stubbs RFA for making the arrangements. An interesting evening was had by all.

Falmouth & Penryn unit wins the District ET Competition - 29th to 31st August 2008

Falmouth & Penryn unit wins the District ET Competition - 29th to 31st August 2008

Five of our cadets took part in the Cornwall District Expedition Training Competition held at Huish Woods scout camp at Taunton. The team comprised AC Mitchell (Team leader), AC Richardson, AC Close, AC Davidson and Cdt Roberts. They were assessed over the whole weekend in Campcraft (tents, cooking and general tidiness around the camp) and Navigation and teamwork during a 12km walk on Saturday. During the walk they had several different mock scenarios to deal with including casulty evacuation and talks on the country code. They also had kit checks and general quiz on EL.
Despite being one cadet short in the team (which reduced their overall score by one sixth), they still won the event, and so are through to the Southwest Area ET Competition being held between 19th and 21st September.
Well done to those cadets - a great effort, and good luck for the Area competition.

Six of our cadets attended a fundraising evening onboard RFA Argus, raising money for the Cornwall branch of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets (MS-SC). They were LC Argo, AC Rawlins, AC Littlewood G, OC Pearce, Cdt Paull and Cdt Woodland. The cadets helped direct guests to and through the ship to the bridge where the function was being held. The cadets then mingled with the guests, answering questions, and then escorted the guests off the ship at the end of the evening. The staff of the Argus and the guests were impressed by our cadets, and had a great evening.
It looks like we have made some friends on Argus!

Littlewood V gained her Advanced Shooting Badge, and the others gained their Basic Shooting Badge. Four of them will now go onto the Area competition (29th-31st August) in Liverpool. The other two are busy that weekend with the District ET Competition - sometimes there are not enough days in the week!

Falmouth & Penryn Sea Cadets Get Their Own Ocean Divers - 15-16th August 2008

Falmouth & Penryn Sea Cadets Get Their Own Ocean Divers - 15-16th August 2008

Four cadets completed their B.S.A.C. Ocean Diver training over the weekend of 15th-16th August 2008. A.C Richardson, A.C. Rawlins, A.C Mitchell, O.C. Tullin are now qualified as Ocean Divers, the first grade on the B.S.A.C. ladder.
The cadets carried out their training dives at Porthkerris, courtesy of the M.O.D. facilities there. Despite challenging weather conditions on the second day, they all completed the requisite number of hours underwater, during which they carried out various training tasks including mask clearing, buddy air sharing, controlled buoyant lifts & surface tows. All took place under the watchful eye of John Adams, the regional BSAC coaching team member. As well as John the other instructors on the day were Pete Batchelour, an ex Royal Navy diver who ensured that activities complied with MOD Joint Services rules and PPO(SCC) Chris Clayton, a member of staff from the Falmouth & Penryn unit who set the whole thing up.
Plans for the future are to get the cadets in for more dives to build up their experience, then to take them up to the next level as Sports Divers. Once at that level they can go forward onto a R.N. diver aquaint course and earn their diver badge.
Other cadets are now asking if they can train as divers so we will be able to keep this particular ball rolling.

YSS Stage 1 Sailing Course 5th/6th & 12th/13th July 2008

We held dingy sailing training for our Junior Cadets (10-12 years old) for the YSS Stage 1 qualification. The course took place over two consecutive weekends, and although the weather was pretty poor on the first weekend, it meant that the theory could be covered in detail. The second weekend blessed us with perfect weather, and after assessment by Falmouth School of Sailing, all the Stage 1 Juniors achieved the qualification. They were assisted in the Picos by senior cadets, who kindly volunteered to help, under the watchful eye of the staff. One Junior achieved his YSS Stage 2. Well done to all.

OiC resigns - June 2008

OiC resigns - June 2008

Officer In Charge CPO Dave Pett will be leaving the Unit on 25 June 2008.
He took charge of the Unit when it was threatened with closure by the Corps, with just 11 cadets, in November 2005. By January 2008 he was presented with the "Best Unit in Cornwall" trophy with 40+ cadets at the Unit, who regularly attend courses. Under his command the Unit also received the first Pennant for many years. His professionalism and commitment to the Unit and its Cadets will be sadly missed. We wish him well.
The role of OiC of the Unit will now fall to PO Richard Jorey, who use to be the First Lieutenant. Richard has been in the Sea Cadets since he joined as a Junior, and therefore should be able to build on the excellent work of Dave Pett.

LC & POC Advancement Board 23-25 May 2008

LC & POC Advancement Board 23-25 May 2008

Congratulations to AC Leach who passed the board and now becomes LC Leach.
Congratulations also to LC Pett who passed the board to become POC Pett. She now becomes one of only three Petty Officer Cadets in the Cornwall District and is the youngest to achieve this Rank. POC Pett joined the Unit at 10 years old in 2002 as a Junior Cadet and after two years was enrolled as a Cadet. Since then she has progressed through the ranks (OC, AC & LC), gained much experience through courses and qualifications with a total of 71 points. POC Pett is a committed and enthusiastic cadet and it is poignant that POC Pett achieved this advancement as it has been ten years since TS Robert Hichens last had a POC in the Unit and that was Richard Jorey who is now a member of staff.

Also at this event CPO Pett OiC was presented with a trophy by the District Officer Lt Cdr Gary Truscott, for the Best Unit in Cornwall for 2007. The last time this Units name was on the trophy was 1988!
This could not of been achieved without the dedication of the staff and those cadets who joined in the activities/training made available to them during 2007 - well done to everyone.

Presentation Evening 2008

Presentation Evening 2008

The Presentation evening for 2007 was held on 31 January 2008. The reason for holding a presentation evening is to recognize those cadets that have excelled in a particular area of endeavor by presenting them with an award that carries their name and is then on view to encourage other cadets to achieve the same.
All the trophies are now on display within the unit where parents are more than welcome to view them.
Cadets that recently gained specialization or proficiency badges and good conduct badges were also presented with these on the evening.
Lt Cdr Gary Truscott attended the evening to present CPO Pett OiC with the Pennant for the outstanding RNUR evening held in May 2007.
