Great Weekend

Great Weekend

What a great weekend

Members of Barnsley Sea Cadets have had a very busy and successful weekend.

On Saturday morning cadets and volunteers attended a conservation day at Worsbrough Mill, where they cut back overgrown bushes and helped collect litter from around the site.

The Band meanwhile were busy with last minute practice for the Eastern Area Band Competition.

Sunday saw the band heading off to Rockingham Castle to take part in their first ever Band Competition. Having been the first to perform they then faced a long wait for the results.

Meanwhile in Doncaster other members of the unit were taking part in the South Yorkshire District Combined Regatta.

I am delighted to say the Band won the Novice Class of the Eastern Area Band Competition and the Powerboat Handling Team also took first place.

I would also like to wish Cdt Cpl Joe good luck in the Junior Young Leaders Field Gun Competition this week, and the Band Good Luck in next Sunday's BYBA Competition.

BFBS Cadet of the Week

BFBS Cadet of the Week

POC Adam was awarded BFBS Cadet of the week.

Well done to this weeks Cadet of the Week, POC Adam Vamplew. He was nominated by his CO, Caroline Devonport.

In November 2014 Adam was involved in a Motorcycle accident, he sustained a serious head injury and severe open fracture of his leg.
Adam had his leg repaired, including skin grafts and an external fixator attached (which he is likely to have to wear for around a year).
However within weeks of returning home from Hospital Adam was back in the unit assisting in training the unit Drill team for Area Drill Competition, for which he was guard commander (after some alterations had been made to allow his uniform to fit over his fixator).
Despite being in great pain at times, Adam has not let his injuries get in the way of his time at cadets. Adam certainly does personify the Corp Value of Commitment and Loyalty.

We think so too! Congratulations Adam!

POC Clark to jump from plane

POC Clark to jump from plane

POC Rosie Clark has recently posted the following on her Facebook page, after deciding to do some fundraising.

From Rosie's page.

"I have decided to do something for charity.

My friend and I are planning to do a free fall parachute jump at the end of April. I will be raising money for two charities, The Early Birth Association and Barnsley Sea Cadets. Both are close to my heart.

The Early Birth Association supports the families and babies in the Trevor Mann baby unit (Royal Sussex Hospital Brighton). My younger Brother was a very premature baby who was smaller than a Barbie doll and weighed less than a bag of sugar. He was a very poorly little baby and needed bringing back to life more than once. He endured a lot and if it wasn't for this baby unit he wouldn't be here today.

Barnsley Sea Cadets is my home unit. I have been dedicated to them since I first joined in 2007 on my tenth birthday following in the footsteps of my older Brother and Sister. I’m now 16 and still attend cadets, my younger Brother joined too. We both enjoy the amazing opportunities that are open to us. I want to raise money for them to give them something back as they have taught me so much along the bumpy road of me growing up.

These charities are dear to me in many ways. The Sea Cadets have made me who I am today and recently gave me the opportunity to be the Navy Board Cadet for eastern area which just makes me more determined to raise money for them and give back so much. The Trevor Mann Baby Unit helps and heals so many sick and tiny babies a year and my little brother was one of these and if you look at him today you wouldn't guess how ill he once was due to the care of the dedicated staff.

Both these charities need money to stay open and they both change lives. Please support me in my fundraising adventure. You can sponsor me by clicking the link below :https://www.justgiving.com/teams/rosieclark

Calling all ex-Sea Cadets

Calling all ex-Sea Cadets

Calling ALL Ex- Sea Cadets. It's Payback Time. You know what it was like. Your own unit worried about its own finances so hardly ever got into the national need. Well Royalist needs replacing so how about showing the new lot how to raise money for a cause we all love. Pass this on, talk about it, share it. There are thousands and thousands of us out there. Some will want to help the new kids on the block...because it's what we do:-http://www.justgiving.com/new-ship-appeal

Barnsley Junior Sea Cadets are looking for more youngsters to join the crew, if you are aged between 10 and 12 years and want to have fun; we want to hear from you.
Junior Sea Cadets have their own training programme and uniform. It is based around a more practical and fun version of the Sea Cadet training programme, but designed for a younger audience.
Juniors get to take part in all sorts of activities, and have the opportunity to have a go at boating, take part in competitions (against other Junior Sea Cadet units) and go on ships visits. Activities include sports, sleepovers, sailing, crafts and much more.

Junior Sea Cadets is all about having fun; plans are already underway for activities and visits throughout next year.
When Junior Sea Cadets turn 12, they may become Sea Cadets.
If you are interested in finding out what we do or wish to join the Juniors Sea Cadets, then come along any Monday or Thursday evening between 6.45pm and 9pm

Cadets and staff once again provided a contingent to both Barnsley and Grimethorpe Armistice Parades.

One half of the unit, including the Royal Marine Cadets, paraded at the Cenotaph in Barnsley with Royal Marine Cadet Yarwood-Milne leading the parade carrying the Union Flag on behalf of the Royal British Legion. Able Cadet Norton followed on behind and carried the Standard on behalf of Barnsley Branch of the Royal Naval Association.

Over in Grimethorpe, the remainder provided a four point Sentinel guard on the Centaph for the duration of the Remembrance, then provided and marching guard leading the march-past.

In both parades refreshments were made available for the cadets following the ceremonies.

Eden Camp Standards Parade '11

Eden Camp Standards Parade '11

This September, Barnsley Unit was once again invited to take part in the biggest gathering of standard bearers in the north of England. Around 75 standards were drawn from various ex-service organisations and along with the Sea Cadets, provided a very colourful display of banners and uniforms.

Eden Camp in North Yorkshire provided the venue with the backdrop proving to be a very fitting scene. Guest of Honour was Commodore Sutermeister - President of Area 11 RNA. Cdre Sutermeister also took the salute of past veterens as they marched past.
